How to Change the World, Map Size, and Seed on Your 7 Days to Die Server

Switch between Navezgane and random-gen worlds, change your map seed or size, and start a new save without nuking your server configuration.

World Type: Navezgane vs RWG

<property name="GameWorld" value="RWG" />
  • Navezgane — the fixed, hand-designed map that ships with the game. Always the same layout. No seed needed.
  • RWG — Random World Generation. Every seed produces a unique map with procedurally placed cities, towns, biomes, and roads.

Most servers run RWG because it stays fresh. Navezgane is predictable, which some experienced players prefer since they know exactly where everything is.

Changing Your Seed

<property name="WorldGenSeed" value="dustbowl2026" />
<property name="WorldGenSize" value="8192" />

Same seed + same size = identical world, every time. This is useful if you want to preview a world in single-player before running it on your server, or if you've shared a seed with your community.

Seeds are case-sensitive. Dustbowl and dustbowl generate different worlds.

Supported Map Sizes

WorldGenSize must be one of these exact values:

4096 (small — fast to generate, limited exploration space)
6144
8192    (default — good balance)
10240
12288
16384 (massive — slow to generate, requires significant disk space)

Entering any other value causes an error on startup. The value must be a supported size, not just any multiple of 2.

Larger maps take longer to generate on first launch and consume more disk space. An 8192 world runs a few GB; 16384 can hit 10–15 GB for a well-explored map.

How Save Data Works

<property name="GameName" value="MySurvival" />

GameName is your save folder name. The actual save data lives at:

UserData/Saves/<GameWorld>/<GameName>/

For example, GameWorld=RWG + GameName=MySurvival saves to:

UserData/Saves/RWG/MySurvival/

Changing GameName starts a fresh save. The old save folder stays on disk — it doesn't get deleted automatically.

Starting a New World

To switch worlds or do a clean wipe:

  1. Stop the server
  2. Change GameWorld, WorldGenSeed, WorldGenSize, and/or GameName in serverconfig.xml
  3. Delete (or rename for backup) the old save folder at UserData/Saves/<GameWorld>/<GameName>/
  4. Start the server — a fresh world generates

Do not just change GameName while keeping the same world type and seed if you want continuity. The old world stays on disk but becomes disconnected from the active config.

Previewing a Seed Before Committing

  1. Use Teragon or similar RWG preview tools to inspect a seed's layout before running it
  2. Test in single-player first: same seed + same size = exactly what the server will generate
