How to Keep Your CS2 Server Updated After Valve Patches
Valve patches break plugins. Here's the correct order to update everything and how to stay running while you wait.
The Update Order Matters
After a Valve patch, you can't just hit update on the server files and expect everything to work. There's a dependency chain, and if you skip steps or do them in the wrong order, your server will either crash or load without plugins.
Update in this exact sequence:
Step 1: Update CS2 Server Files
Use your control panel's update button, or via SteamCMD:
steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 730 validate +quit
This updates the base CS2 dedicated server. Do this first, before touching anything else.
Step 2: Update Metamod:Source
Check https://www.sourcemm.net/downloads.php?branch=master for a new build. Metamod needs to be recompiled against the new CS2 build — the version that worked before the patch will often stop working after.
Download the new build, extract, and replace the files in:
game/csgo/addons/metamod/
Also update the version string in game/csgo/gameinfo.gi if the new Metamod install requires it (it usually handles this automatically).
Step 3: Update CounterStrikeSharp
Check https://github.com/roflmuffin/CounterStrikeSharp/releases for a new release that targets the updated CS2 build.
Replace the CSS files in:
game/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp/
Keep your configs/ and plugins/ folders — only replace the core CSS files.
Step 4: Update Individual Plugins
Each plugin (SimpleAdmin, RTV, Deathmatch, etc.) may also need an update after a CS2 patch. Check the GitHub releases page for each plugin you're running.
What Happens If CSS Isn't Updated Yet
Sometimes Valve drops a patch and the CS2/Metamod/CSS maintainers need a day or two to catch up. In the meantime, your server will exhibit one of these symptoms:
- Server starts but plugins don't load
- Server crashes on startup
- Console shows errors referencing game interface versions
Temporary fix — run vanilla while you wait:
Remove Metamod from the gameinfo.gi file by commenting out or deleting the Metamod entry:
This lets your server run vanilla CS2 without plugins. Players can still connect and play — they just lose plugin features temporarily.
Re-add the Metamod line once CSS and Metamod are updated.
Staying Ahead of Patches
- Subscribe to the CS2 server operators Discord — community maintainers post compatibility updates within hours of a Valve patch
- Watch the CounterStrikeSharp GitHub — releases are tagged; watch the repo for notifications
- Follow key plugin authors — NockyCZ, abnerfs, b3none, and roflmuffin are the main names to watch
- Check r/GlobalOffensive or r/cs2 for patch notes that indicate server-side changes
Most Common Post-Patch Symptom
Server starts, but plugins show as not loaded in console. You'll see something like:
[CounterStrikeSharp] Failed to load plugin: ...
This almost always means either CSS or Metamod needs an update. Don't start digging into plugin configs — update the framework first.
