How to Troubleshoot Common Counter-Strike: Source Server Issues

Diagnose and fix the most common CSS dedicated server problems — from the server not appearing in browser to MetaMod failing to load.

CSS Server Troubleshooting

When something breaks, start with the server console output and cstrike/addons/sourcemod/logs/. Most issues leave a clear error message if you know where to look.

Server Not Appearing in the Server Browser

Most likely cause: sv_lan 1

Check server.cfg:

sv_lan 0 ← must be 0 for public servers

If sv_lan 1 is set, the server registers as a LAN server and is invisible to Steam's global browser.

Secondary cause: firewall blocking UDP 27015

CSS uses UDP 27015 for all game traffic. Open this port inbound on your firewall/router. If you're on a VPS, check your cloud provider's security group rules too — they sit above the OS firewall.

Test visibility from outside your network by searching for your IP directly in the server browser or using a tool like GameTracker.

Clients Timing Out After Map Change

Cause: tickrate or rate mismatch

When clients reconnect after a map change, rate settings from a previous session can conflict. Set these consistently in server.cfg:

sv_minrate 20000
sv_maxrate 128000
sv_mincmdrate 66
sv_maxcmdrate 66
sv_minupdaterate 66
sv_maxupdaterate 66

CSS's default tickrate is 66. If you're running a custom tickrate (some servers run 100 tick for competitive), launch srcds with -tickrate 100 and set all rate cvars accordingly.

MetaMod Not Loading

Cause: wrong gameinfo.txt edit

Open cstrike/gameinfo.txt and find the SearchPaths block. The Game addons/metamod line must be above Game cstrike:

SearchPaths
{
Game addons/metamod ← must be FIRST
    Game cstrike
    Game hl2
}

If it's below Game cstrike, the engine finds the game files before MetaMod and MetaMod never intercepts. Fix the ordering and restart.

Also verify the MetaMod files actually extracted correctly — cstrike/addons/metamod/ should exist with .vdf files inside.

SourceMod Plugin Fails to Load

Check the logs:

cstrike/addons/sourcemod/logs/errors_YYYYMMDD.log

Common causes and fixes:

Log Message Fix
Unable to load plugin "myplugin.smx" Check SM version — plugin may require newer SM
Required extension "xyz" not found Download and install the missing .ext file
Native "SomeFunction" not found Plugin depends on another plugin not installed
Could not find required game "cstrike" Wrong SourceMod build — redownload the CSS version

Custom Map Won't Load for Clients (FastDL Issues)

If clients get stuck on download or never receive the map:

  1. Verify sv_downloadurl is set correctly in server.cfg:
    sv_downloadurl "http://yourcdn.example.com/cstrike/"

  2. Test the URL manually — paste http://yourcdn.example.com/cstrike/maps/yourmapname.bsp into a browser. You should get a file download.
  3. Confirm directory structure mirrors cstrike/ exactly on the FastDL host.
  4. Check that the web server sends files without authentication — FastDL URLs must be publicly accessible.

Bad CRC Error on Custom Map Download

Disconnect: Bad CRC for maps/yourmapname.bsp

The .bsp file on the FastDL server does not match the .bsp in cstrike/maps/. They must be byte-for-byte identical. Re-upload the file from your server's cstrike/maps/ to FastDL to ensure they match.

Console Spam: WARNING: tried to enqueue a request

Cause: disk I/O bottleneck

This appears when the server can't write data to disk fast enough — usually on shared hosting with slow storage under heavy player load. Options:

  • Reduce sv_maxupdaterate slightly (e.g. from 66 to 60) to lower I/O pressure
  • Reduce sv_logfile frequency or disable logging temporarily to see if that's the culprit
  • Move to a server with faster storage (SSD vs HDD makes a significant difference)

SourceMod Admin Commands Not Working for a Player

  1. Run sm_reloadadmins in console to refresh the admin list from disk.
  2. Verify their Steam ID in admins_simple.ini is the correct legacy format: STEAM_0:X:XXXXXXX — not a SteamID64.
  3. Run status while they're connected and compare the Steam ID in the table against what's in your config.
