Rolling Back and Wiping Your World

How to roll back your world to a previous day using c_rollback, and how to perform a full world wipe.

Overview

DST provides two ways to reset world state: rolling back to a previous in-game day using the c_rollback console command, and performing a full wipe by deleting the save folders. Both operations are irreversible without a prior backup.

Rollback via Console

The c_rollback(n) command rolls the world back by n in-game days. It uses the server's internal snapshot history.

To roll back one day:

c_rollback(1)

To roll back three days:

c_rollback(3)

Important: This command acts on the shard whose console it is run from. For a cluster with Master and Caves, you must run c_rollback(n) on each shard separately if you want both shards rolled back. Rolling back only Master while Caves remains at the current state can cause inconsistencies (e.g., items that were moved between shards no longer exist in their expected locations).

The maximum rollback depth depends on how many snapshots the server has accumulated. If you request more days than snapshots available, the server rolls back as far as it can.

Backup Before Rollback

There is no automatic backup before a rollback. If the rollback makes things worse or you change your mind, you cannot undo it. Manually back up your save folders before running c_rollback:

Cluster_1/Master/save/
Cluster_1/Caves/save/

Copy these folders to a safe location (outside the server directory). If the rollback goes wrong, stop the server, restore the backed-up folders, and restart.

Full World Wipe

A full wipe destroys the world and forces regeneration on the next server start. Character progression and inventories in most cases do NOT persist through a wipe when starting from a fresh world — communicate this to your players beforehand.

Steps:

  1. Stop all shard processes (both Master and Caves)
  2. Delete the save folder for each shard:
rm -rf /home/container/Cluster_1/Master/save/
rm -rf /home/container/Cluster_1/Caves/save/
  1. Optionally update leveldataoverride.lua if you want different world settings
  2. Start the server — new worlds generate automatically for each shard

The save/ folder is recreated on the next successful startup.

Partial Wipe (One Shard Only)

You can wipe only one shard. For example, to regenerate Caves while keeping the overworld:

  1. Stop both processes
  2. Delete only Cluster_1/Caves/save/
  3. Restart both processes

The overworld loads from its existing save while Caves regenerates. The cave entrance and exit connections are re-established automatically.

Caves Cluster_1/Caves/save/

Scheduled Saves

The server autosaves periodically. You can trigger a manual save at any time from the console:

c_save()

Run this on each shard console to ensure both are saved before performing maintenance or a planned rollback.
