Common FiveM Server Setup Issues
Troubleshooting common FiveM server problems — server.cfg errors, resource failures, txAdmin issues, and connection problems.
Common FiveM Server Setup Issues
FiveM servers have many moving parts. Here are the most common issues and how to fix them.
Issue 1: Server Won't Start — server.cfg Errors
Symptoms: Server crashes immediately or shows config errors in the console.
Common Causes:
- Missing or malformed
server.cfg - Invalid license key
- Syntax errors in resource declarations
Fixes:
- Check your
server.cfgfor basic required entries:
# Required settings
sv_hostname "My DustBowl FiveM Server"
sv_maxclients 48
sv_licenseKey "your_cfx_license_key_here"
# Resources
ensure mapmanager
ensure chat
ensure spawnmanager
ensure sessionmanager
ensure basic-gamemode
ensure hardcap
- Verify your license key at keymaster.fivem.net
- Make sure the key matches your server's IP address
- Check for typos — every
ensureline must reference an existing resource folder
Issue 2: Resources Failing to Start
Symptoms: Console shows Couldn't start resource <name> or Failed to load script.
Fixes:
- Check the resource folder exists in your
resources/directory - Verify the resource has a valid
fxmanifest.luaor__resource.lua:
-- Example fxmanifest.lua
fx_version 'cerulean'
game 'gta5'
client_script 'client.lua'
server_script 'server.lua'
- Check for missing dependencies — many resources require others:
# Load dependencies first
ensure mysql-async
ensure es_extended
ensure esx_menu_default
- Look at the console error for the specific file and line number
- If using SQL-dependent resources, make sure your database is configured
Issue 3: txAdmin Problems
Symptoms: txAdmin panel won't load, shows authentication errors, or server control doesn't work.
Fixes:
- txAdmin won't open: Check the txAdmin port (usually
40120). Access it athttp://your-server-ip:40120 - Authentication failed: Reset your txAdmin PIN from the server console output on first boot
- Server won't start from txAdmin: Verify the server data path is set correctly in txAdmin settings:
Server Data Folder: /home/container/server-data
CFX Server Path: /home/container/alpine/opt/cfx-server
- Backup/restore issues: Ensure txAdmin has write permissions to the server directory
Issue 4: Players Can't Connect
Symptoms: Players see "Connection failed" or get stuck on the loading screen.
Fixes:
- Check your server list visibility:
# In server.cfg — make sure this isn't blocking connections
sv_endpointprivacy true
Verify the server is listed: Search for your server name on servers.fivem.net
Long loading times are usually caused by:
- Too many resources (especially heavy ones like car packs)
- Large client-side file downloads
- Slow database queries during player join
Fix streaming issues:
# Increase connection timeout for heavy servers
sv_timeout 600000
set sv_enforceGameBuild 2944
Issue 5: Database Connection Errors
Symptoms: Resources that use MySQL fail with connection errors.
Fixes:
- Check your database connection string in
server.cfg:
set mysql_connection_string "mysql://user:password@localhost:3306/fivem?charset=utf8mb4"
- Verify the database exists and the user has permissions
- If using WISP, create a database from the Databases tab and use those credentials
- Test the connection from the server console
General Tips
- Read the console output — FiveM provides detailed error messages
- Add resources one at a time and restart between each to isolate issues
- Keep backups of a working
server.cfgbefore making changes - Update regularly — outdated FiveM artifacts cause compatibility issues
- Check resource documentation — most issues are covered in the resource's README or support channels
