Installing and Using ULX and ULib Admin Mod
How to install ULib and ULX via Workshop, grant superadmin, manage user groups, and use common admin commands in-game.
What ULX and ULib Are
ULX is the most widely-used admin mod for GMod. It provides in-game admin menus, rank-based permissions, and console commands for managing players. ULib is its required dependency — a shared library that provides the permission and group system ULX builds on.
ULib must be loaded before ULX. Their Workshop IDs:
| Addon | Workshop ID |
|---|---|
| ULib | 557962238 |
| ULX | 557962280 |
Installation via Workshop
Add both Workshop IDs to your server's Workshop collection. Order matters — ensure ULib appears before ULX in load order. Since addons load alphabetically, ulib sorts before ulx naturally. If you have renamed folders, check that ULib's folder name sorts first.
Restart the server after adding both addons. Check console output for:
ULib 2.x loaded.
ULX 3.x loaded.
Granting Superadmin
The first time ULX loads, no one has admin. You must grant superadmin from the server console before anyone can use the admin system in-game.
- Connect to the server with the Steam account you want to promote
- In the panel console (or via RCON), run:
ulx adduser "YourSteamName" superadmin
Use your exact Steam display name as it appears in-game. If the name contains spaces, include them in the quotes.
Alternatively, use the Steam64 ID:
ulx adduserid STEAM_0:1:12345678 superadmin
User Data Files
ULX stores its data in:
garrysmod/data/ULib/users.txt # Per-user assignments
garrysmod/data/ULib/groups.txt # Group definitions and permissions
These are plain text files. You can edit them directly via SFTP if needed, but be careful with formatting — malformed files cause ULib to reset to defaults on restart.
Default Groups
ULX ships with three default groups:
| Group | Description |
|---|---|
operator |
Lowest admin tier; basic moderation tools |
admin |
Mid-tier; most moderation commands |
superadmin |
Full access; cannot be restricted |
Add custom groups via the ULX admin menu in-game or by editing groups.txt.
Common Console Commands
Run these from the server console or via RCON:
ulx adduser "Name" admin # Promote player to admin
ulx removeuser "Name" # Remove admin status
ulx ban "Name" 60 "Reason" # Ban for 60 minutes
ulx unban STEAM_0:1:12345678 # Unban by Steam ID
ulx map gm_flatgrass # Change map
ulx slap "Name" 10 # Slap player for 10 damage
In-Game Commands
Players with admin rank can use:
| Command | Action |
|---|---|
!menu in chat |
Open the ULX graphical admin menu |
ulx kick "Name" "Reason" |
Kick a player |
ulx slay "Name" |
Kill a player |
ulx bring "Name" |
Teleport player to you |
ulx goto "Name" |
Teleport yourself to player |
ulx ban "Name" 0 "Reason" |
Permanent ban (0 = permanent) |
The !menu chat command is the easiest way for admins to manage players without memorizing console commands.
Configuring Permissions
Permissions are managed through the ULX admin menu under the Groups tab. You can:
- Add or remove commands from each group
- Create new groups with custom permission sets
- Set group inheritance (e.g., admin inherits all operator permissions)
Changes are saved immediately to groups.txt and persist across restarts.
