Diagnosing Server Lag
Lag can come from many sources. Let's narrow it down.
Is It Server-Side or Client-Side?
- If all players experience lag → likely server-side
- If only you experience lag → likely your connection
Server-Side Lag
Check your AMP dashboard:
- CPU usage over 80%? — Your server may need an upgrade or optimization
- Memory full? — Memory leaks from mods or too many entities
- TPS/Tick Rate dropping? — The server can't keep up with the simulation
Fixes:
- Reduce max players
- Lower simulation settings (view distance, entity limits)
- Remove resource-heavy mods
- Schedule regular restarts to clear memory
- Upgrade to a dedicated server for guaranteed resources
Client-Side Lag
If only you're lagging:
- Check your ping — Run
pingto your server IP in a terminal - Under 80ms = good for most games
- Over 150ms = you may be far from our North Carolina datacenter
- Try a wired connection instead of WiFi
- Close background downloads/streams
Network Route Issues
Sometimes the path between you and the server has a bad hop:
- Run a traceroute:
tracert <server-ip>(Windows) ortraceroute <server-ip>(Mac/Linux) - Look for any hop with very high latency or packet loss
- This is usually your ISP — contact them with the traceroute results
