How to Configure Game Rules and Mutators
Tune round timers, friendly fire, respawn rules, and economy settings in Game.ini, and apply mutators to individual map cycle entries for dramatic gameplay changes.
Game Rules in Game.ini
Most gameplay rule adjustments go in Game.ini under the [/Script/Insurgency.INSGameMode] section:
[/Script/Insurgency.INSGameMode]
MaxPlayers=16
RoundTime=180
WarmupTime=30
RespawnTime=10
FriendlyFireModifier=0.0
CacheKillScore=400
StartingCash=900
bVoteKickEnabled=True
Setting Reference
| Setting | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
MaxPlayers |
Integer | Player slot limit |
RoundTime |
Integer | Seconds per round before time expires |
WarmupTime |
Integer | Pre-round warmup duration in seconds |
RespawnTime |
Integer | Wave respawn interval in seconds (wave-based modes) |
FriendlyFireModifier |
Float | 0.0 = no FF, 0.5 = half damage, 1.0 = full FF |
CacheKillScore |
Integer | Points awarded for destroying a weapon cache |
StartingCash |
Integer | Starting supply points for each player |
bVoteKickEnabled |
Bool | Whether players can vote to kick each other |
Adjust RoundTime and RespawnTime based on your map size and player count. Larger maps and fewer players benefit from longer timers.
What Are Mutators?
Mutators are gameplay overhauls that go beyond simple number tweaks. They fundamentally change how the game plays. Unlike the settings above, mutators are not set in Game.ini — they're applied per-map-entry in your MapCycle.txt.
Applying a Mutator
Append ?Mutators=MutatorName to any map cycle entry:
Farmhouse?Scenario=Scenario_Farmhouse_Checkpoint_Security?Lighting=Day?Mutators=HardcoreMode
To stack multiple mutators, separate them with commas:
Farmhouse?Scenario=Scenario_Farmhouse_Checkpoint_Security?Lighting=Day?Mutators=HardcoreMode,FriendlyFire
Common Mutators
| Mutator Name | What it does |
|---|---|
Arcade |
Enables unlimited respawns (removes wave system) |
HardcoreMode |
No HUD markers, reduced ammo, more lethal — full milsim feel |
FriendlyFire |
Enables team damage (overrides FriendlyFireModifier) |
GunGame |
Each kill advances you to the next weapon in a preset list |
HighVelocity |
All projectiles travel faster and hit harder |
Example: Mixed Rotation with Mutators
A rotation that mixes standard and hardcore rounds:
Precinct?Scenario=Scenario_Precinct_Checkpoint_Security?Lighting=Day
Ministry?Scenario=Scenario_Ministry_Checkpoint_Security?Lighting=Night?Mutators=HardcoreMode
Farmhouse?Scenario=Scenario_Farmhouse_Checkpoint_Security?Lighting=Day
Refinery?Scenario=Scenario_Refinery_Push_Security?Lighting=Day?Mutators=HardcoreMode,FriendlyFire
Tips
HardcoreModesignificantly increases the skill floor — let your community know before enabling it.FriendlyFireModifier=0.5inGame.iniis a softer alternative to theFriendlyFiremutator if you want to discourage but not punish teamkilling harshly.- Economy settings like
StartingCashhave the most noticeable effect in Push mode, where supply points determine equipment.
