Adding Custom Maps to Your Mindustry Server

Install custom .msav map files on your Mindustry dedicated server by uploading them to the config/maps/ directory, then loading them with the host command.

Custom Maps on Your Mindustry Server

Mindustry maps use the .msav (Mindustry Save) file format. Adding a custom map is a matter of dropping the file in the right directory.

Map Directory

All custom maps go in:

config/maps/

This directory is relative to wherever your server-release.jar lives. Create it if it doesn't exist:

mkdir -p ~/mindustry-server/config/maps

Finding Custom Maps

From the Mindustry community:

  • GitHub: mindustry-nydus map pool — community-curated maps
  • Mindustry Discord servers — #maps channels
  • The Mindustry in-game community browser (maps published by players)

Exporting from the in-game editor:

  1. In Mindustry client, open Editor
  2. Design or open a map
  3. Click the export icon → Export Map
  4. The .msav file saves to your maps/ folder on the client machine

Uploading to the Server

Transfer the .msav file to config/maps/:

scp MyCustomMap.msav user@YOUR_SERVER_IP:~/mindustry-server/config/maps/

Or via SFTP using FileZilla, WinSCP, or your panel's file manager.

Loading the Custom Map

From the server console, list available maps to confirm it was found:

maps

Your custom map should appear in the list. Load it:

host MyCustomMap survival

Use the filename without the .msav extension. Map names are case-sensitive on Linux.

Auto-loading a Custom Map on Startup

Set the startCommands config to host your custom map automatically:

config startCommands "host MyCustomMap survival"

The server will load this map every time it starts.

Troubleshooting

Map not appearing in maps list:

  • Check the file is in config/maps/ (not config/ or the server root)
  • The file must have the .msav extension
  • Restart the server and run maps again — the list refreshes on restart

Map loads but crashes immediately:

  • The map may have been created with a newer or older version of Mindustry than the server
  • Try downloading a fresh copy or re-exporting from the same client version as the server

Name mismatch:

  • On Linux, mymap and MyMap are different. Use maps to see the exact name the server expects.
