How to Install and Configure LuckPerms

Set up LuckPerms — the go-to permissions plugin for Paper and Spigot — create groups, assign permissions, and put players in the right roles.

What Is LuckPerms?

LuckPerms is the standard permissions plugin for Paper/Spigot servers. It lets you create groups (like member, moderator, admin), assign specific permissions to those groups, and place players into them — without giving anyone full OP. It's far safer and more flexible than the built-in OP system for anything beyond a private server.

Download LuckPerms from https://luckperms.net.

Step 1: Install LuckPerms

  1. Download the LuckPerms-Bukkit jar from https://luckperms.net/download.
  2. Upload it to your plugins/ folder via the WISP file manager.
  3. Restart your server.
  4. LuckPerms will generate its config and default data files under plugins/LuckPerms/.

Step 2: Open the Web Editor

LuckPerms has a web-based editor that's much easier than typing commands. From the console (no / prefix):

lp editor

Or in-game with OP:

/lp editor

The console will print a URL. Open it in your browser. This is the LuckPerms web editor — all changes you make here are applied back to your server when you click Save.

Step 3: Create Groups

In the web editor, you'll see the default default group. Create additional groups by clicking Create Group. Recommended starting groups:

Group Purpose
default All players start here. Minimal permissions.
member Trusted players. Can use most gameplay features.
moderator Can kick, mute, temp-ban.
admin Full plugin access, minus the most destructive commands.

Step 4: Assign Permissions to Groups

Click a group, then click Add Permission. Permissions follow a plugin.permission.node format. Examples:

essentials.home
essentials.sethome
essentials.warp
worldguard.region.claim

You can also use wildcard permissions to grant everything from a plugin:

essentials.*

Use this cautiously — wildcards grant future permissions from that plugin too.

Step 5: Set Group Inheritance

Groups can inherit permissions from other groups. For example, your moderator group can inherit from member so moderators automatically have all member permissions too.

In the web editor, on the moderator group, add a Parent Group of member.

Step 6: Apply Changes

When done in the web editor, click Save (top right). The editor will display a command to run back in your Minecraft console to import the changes:

lp applyedits <token>

Paste and run this in the WISP console. Changes apply instantly — no restart needed.

Assigning Players to Groups

To put a specific player in a group, run from the console:

lp user PlayerName parent set moderator

Or in-game:

/lp user PlayerName parent set moderator

To check what group a player is in:

/lp user PlayerName info

Setting the Default Group

All new players land in the default group automatically. If you want new players to go directly to member, run:

/lp group default parent set member

This makes default inherit member's permissions, so effectively everyone starts as a member.
