Installing Mods on a Mordhau Server

Add Workshop and mod.io mods to your Mordhau server by listing their IDs in Game.ini. The server downloads and applies them automatically on startup. Covers finding mod IDs, config syntax, and custom PAK files.

Mordhau Server Mods

Mordhau supports server-side mods distributed via mod.io and Steam Workshop. The server downloads and applies them automatically when listed in Game.ini.

Finding Mod IDs

mod.io:

  1. Visit mod.io/g/mordhau
  2. Browse to the mod you want
  3. The mod ID is the number at the end of the URL: mod.io/g/mordhau/m/modname-12345 → ID is 12345

Steam Workshop:

  1. Find the mod on the Steam Workshop for Mordhau
  2. The Workshop item ID is in the URL: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=XXXXXXXXX

Adding Mods in Game.ini

Stop the server, then edit Mordhau/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/Game.ini:

[/Script/Mordhau.MordhauGameSession]
Mods=12345
Mods=67890
Mods=11111

One Mods= line per mod ID. The server downloads mods automatically on the next startup.

How Mods Work on Mordhone Servers

  • Server downloads the mod automatically from mod.io on startup
  • Players are notified of required mods when they try to connect
  • Players without the mods are prompted to download them before joining
  • Modded servers take slightly longer to appear in the server browser after a restart

Custom PAK Files

For custom maps or mutators distributed as .pak files (not through mod.io), place them in:

Mordhau/Content/CustomPaks/

Create the directory if it doesn't exist:

mkdir -p /home/steam/mordhau/Mordhau/Content/CustomPaks/

Upload the .pak file to that directory and restart the server. The content is loaded automatically.

Verifying Mods Are Loaded

Check the server logs on startup:

tail -f /home/steam/mordhau/Mordhau/Saved/Logs/Mordhau.log

Look for lines referencing mod downloads or load confirmations. Errors loading a mod will also appear here.

Troubleshooting Mods

Players can't join after adding mods:

  • Make sure the mod ID is correct (check the mod.io URL again)
  • The server needs an active internet connection to download mods on startup
  • Check logs for download failures

Mod not downloading:

  • Verify the server has outbound internet access on port 443 (HTTPS)
  • Try removing and re-adding the mod ID to force a fresh download

Server crashes after adding a mod:

  • The mod may be incompatible with the current Mordhau server version
  • Remove the Mods= entry for the problematic mod and check the mod's page for version compatibility notes
