Overview

Rust categorizes administrative privileges into three distinct auth levels:

  • Auth Level 2 (Server Owner): Complete administrative access, including console execution, ban management, flying (noclip), player godmode, spawning entities, and granting permissions to other users.
  • Auth Level 1 (Moderator): Moderation privileges including kicking, banning, teleports, and spectating. Cannot grant or revoke other admins.
  • Auth Level 0 (Regular Player): Standard user without elevated commands.

Adding Administrators

Administrative privileges are stored in /server/<server-identity>/cfg/users.cfg.

  1. Obtain your 64-bit Steam ID (SteamID64, a 17-digit number such as 76561198000000000).
  2. Open the DustBowl Warden Console tab while the server is running.
  3. To assign an Owner (Level 2):
ownerid 76561198000000000 "YourUsername" "Optional Reason"
  1. To assign a Moderator (Level 1):
moderatorid 76561198000000000 "ModUsername" "Moderator Role"
  1. Critical Step: Persist the change to disk immediately:
server.writecfg
  1. If you are currently connected to the server, reconnect for your new authorization level to take effect on the client.

Revoking Administrative Access

To remove an admin or moderator:

removeowner 76561198000000000
server.writecfg

Essential Admin Console Commands

Press F1 in-game to access the developer console. The following commands require Auth Level 1 or 2:

  • noclip: Toggles free-flying mode (bindable to a key via bind l noclip).
  • spectate: Spectates random active players.
  • spectate <player>: Spectates a designated player.
  • respawn: Teleports you out of spectate and respawns your avatar.
  • teleport <player>: Teleports you directly to another player.
  • teleportpos <x, y, z>: Teleports to explicit world coordinates.

Moderation & Enforcement

  • kick <player> "reason": Disconnects the player from the active session.
  • ban <player/SteamID> "reason": Adds the player to bans.cfg and terminates their session.
  • unban <SteamID>: Removes player from the active ban list.
  • banlist: Prints all active bans to the console.
  • mute <player>: Mutes player from global text and voice chat.
  • unmute <player>: Restores chat privileges.

Environment & World State

  • env.time <0-24>: Sets current server in-game time of day.
  • weather.clouds <0-1>: Controls cloud cover density.
  • weather.rain <0-1>: Adjusts active rainfall.
  • server.save: Forces an immediate world save to disk.

In-Game Spawn Menu

Admins with Auth Level 2 can press F1 and select the Items, Entities, or ConVars tabs at the top of the console screen. This opens an interactive graphical catalog allowing you to spawn items, test raiding damage, and inspect entity colliders directly.
