Overview
As a Rust wipe progresses, bases multiply, deployables accumulate, and overall world entity counts rise. Unoptimized servers experience tickrate drops, rubberbanding, delayed hit registration, and prolonged save stutters.
This guide outlines performance tuning techniques to maintain a stable 30 tickrate on high-population servers.
Monitoring Server Health
In the server console or RCON, run:
fps
This returns the current server frame rate and frame time. In Rust, server FPS represents simulation tickrate.
- 30 FPS: Target vanilla tickrate. Smooth hit detection and AI movement.
- 20 - 29 FPS: Acceptable during heavy raid battles or peak hours.
- Below 15 FPS: Noticeable input lag, delayed door opens, and rubberbanding.
To view total active entities:
entity.count
Vanilla servers run optimally with fewer than 250,000 entities. Performance degrades rapidly when entity counts exceed 400,000.
Key Performance ConVars for server.cfg
Add or adjust these directives in your server.cfg:
# ── Frame Budget & Physics ──
fps.limit 60
server.tickrate 30
# ── AI & Navmesh Optimization ──
ai.think true
ai.move true
nav_disable true
# ── Garbage Collection Tuning ──
gc.buffer 2048
gc.incremental true
# ── Structure Decay & Entity Cleanup ──
decay.scale 1.0
decay.upkeep true
server.saveinterval 600
Explaining the ConVars:
gc.buffer 2048: Unity's default garbage collector triggers collection spikes when memory runs low. Increasing the GC buffer to2048(2GB) prevents frequent collection pauses.gc.incremental true: Splits garbage collection across multiple simulation frames instead of pausing the entire server thread during cleanup.server.saveinterval 600: Lengthens the interval between disk saves to 10 minutes, eliminating brief hitching during world serialization on busy servers.
Managing Entity Clutter and Decay
- Enforce Upkeep: Never disable
decay.upkeepon public servers. Abandoned bases will never despawn, causing entity counts to surpass 500,000 within two weeks. - Clear Unused Vehicles: Vehicles like minicopters, scrap copters, boats, and horses consume server tick time. Enable decay for unattended vehicles:
minicopter.population 1
motorrowboat.population 1
rhib.population 1
