Installing Mods on a Satisfactory Dedicated Server
Install mods on a Satisfactory dedicated server using the Satisfactory Mod Manager (SMM) and FICSIT.app. Covers SMM setup, mod installation, server-side vs client-side mods, and update management.
Installing Mods on a Satisfactory Dedicated Server
Satisfactory mods are distributed through FICSIT.app (the official mod repository) and installed using the Satisfactory Mod Manager (SMM).
How Satisfactory Mods Work
- Server-side mods must be installed on the server AND all connecting clients
- Some mods are client-only and don't require server installation
- The Mod Manager handles dependency resolution automatically
Installing the Satisfactory Mod Manager (SMM)
The Mod Manager has a graphical interface for Windows. For Linux servers, use the ficsit-cli command-line tool:
# Download ficsit-cli (check https://github.com/satisfactorymodding/ficsit-cli for latest release)
wget https://github.com/satisfactorymodding/ficsit-cli/releases/latest/download/ficsit-linux-amd64
chmod +x ficsit-linux-amd64
mv ficsit-linux-amd64 ~/ficsit-cli
Installing Mods with ficsit-cli
# Install a mod by its mod reference (found on ficsit.app in the mod's URL)
~/ficsit-cli install /home/steam/satisfactory ModReferenceName
# Example: Install the popular "Pak Utility Mod"
~/ficsit-cli install /home/steam/satisfactory PakUtility
# List installed mods
~/ficsit-cli list /home/steam/satisfactory
# Update all mods
~/ficsit-cli update /home/steam/satisfactory
The mod reference is the short identifier in the ficsit.app URL: ficsit.app/mod/ModReferenceName
Finding Mod References
- Browse mods at ficsit.app
- Open a mod's page — the mod reference is in the URL:
ficsit.app/mod/ModReferenceName - The mod page also states whether it requires server installation
Installed Mod Location
Mods are installed to:
/home/steam/satisfactory/FactoryGame/Mods/
Each mod gets its own subdirectory. The game loads all subdirectories in this folder on startup.
Notifying Players of Required Mods
When server-side mods are installed, all players must have matching mods. Without them, players will receive a connection error about mod mismatches.
Recommended approach:
- Share a mod list (ficsit.app supports shareable mod profiles)
- Players install matching mods via the Satisfactory Mod Manager on their client
Removing Mods
# Remove a specific mod
~/ficsit-cli remove /home/steam/satisfactory ModReferenceName
# Or manually delete the mod directory
rm -rf /home/steam/satisfactory/FactoryGame/Mods/ModReferenceName
Restart the server after removing mods. Removing a mod from a save that used it may cause issues — back up the save first.
