SCP: Secret Laboratory Server Troubleshooting
Fix common SCP:SL server problems — Mono errors, server not appearing publicly, players can't connect, EXILED plugin crashes, and admin panel access issues.
SCP: Secret Laboratory Server Troubleshooting
Server Won't Start — Mono Errors
"mono: command not found" or startup crash:
SCP:SL requires the Mono runtime. Install it:
sudo apt-get install mono-complete -y
mono --version # Should output Mono version
"libMonoPosixHelper.so" errors: Install additional Mono libraries:
sudo apt-get install mono-complete libmono-system-drawing4.0-cil -y
Server Not Appearing in Server Browser
This is expected behavior for new, unverified servers. SCP:SL requires Northwood verification for public listing.
Workaround: Use Direct Connect with your server's IP and port 7777.
If previously verified and now unlisted:
- Ensure the server has been online consistently
- Check that you haven't violated Northwood's Server Rules
- Contact Northwood in the Discord to inquire about your listing status
Players Can't Connect
Check firewall:
sudo ufw allow 7777/udp && sudo ufw status
Verify server is listening:
ss -ulnp | grep 7777
Should show the server process listening on 0.0.0.0:7777.
Version mismatch: Update the server after game updates:
~/steamcmd/steamcmd.sh \
+force_install_dir /home/steam/scpsl \
+login anonymous \
+app_update 996560 validate \
+quit
Server Crashes After Adding EXILED Plugin
Isolate the problem plugin:
- Move all plugin
.dllfiles out of~/.config/EXILED/Plugins/ - Add them back one at a time, restarting between each
- When the crash returns, that's the problem plugin
Check the plugin's GitHub page for known issues or version compatibility requirements.
Admin Panel (RA) Not Accessible
SteamID not in config:
Ensure the player's SteamID64 (not Steam32 ID) is listed in config_remoteadmin.txt:
Members:
- 76561198012345678
Restart the server after editing. Check the format carefully — YAML indentation matters.
Wrong SteamID64: Use steamid.io to convert the player's Steam URL to SteamID64.
"Online mode" Connection Issues
If online_mode: true is set (default), players must have a valid Steam session:
- Ensure players are logged in to Steam
- Check Steam isn't in offline mode
- As a test, set
online_mode: falsetemporarily (not recommended for public servers)
High CPU Usage
Common causes and fixes:
- Too many players: Reduce
max_playersinconfig_gameplay.txt - Faulty plugin: A poorly coded EXILED plugin can spike CPU; remove plugins one by one
- Round never ending: Ensure the round can complete by checking
config_gameplay.txtrespawn and end-condition settings
Config Changes Not Taking Effect
All config changes require a server restart:
# In LocalAdmin console:
stop
# Then relaunch:
./LocalAdmin 7777
Config files are only read at startup. Changes made while the server is running are overwritten by the server's in-memory state on shutdown.
