Running a SCUM Server on Linux with Wine
SCUMServer.exe is a Windows binary. This guide covers running it on Linux using Wine 11, including a pre-configured 64-bit Wine prefix, required dependencies, and systemd integration.
Running a SCUM Server on Linux with Wine
SCUM's dedicated server (SCUMServer.exe) is a Windows binary with no native Linux build. Wine 11 provides excellent compatibility for running it on Ubuntu or Debian-based Linux hosts.
Prerequisites
- Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or Ubuntu 24.04 LTS (64-bit)
- At least 16 GB RAM
- Wine 11 (WineHQ stable) — see installation steps below
- SteamCMD
Installing Wine 11
# Enable 32-bit support
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
# Add WineHQ repository key
sudo mkdir -pm755 /etc/apt/keyrings
sudo wget -O /etc/apt/keyrings/winehq-archive.key \
https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key
# Add repository (Ubuntu 22.04 example)
sudo wget -NP /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ \
https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/dists/jammy/winehq-jammy.sources
sudo apt update
sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable
Verify the installation:
wine --version
# Should output: wine-11.x (or later)
Setting Up the Wine Prefix
Create a dedicated 64-bit Wine prefix for the SCUM server:
export WINEPREFIX=/opt/scum-server/wine
export WINEARCH=win64
winecfg
winecfg opens a GUI — dismiss it after it initializes the prefix. This creates the 64-bit Windows directory structure under /opt/scum-server/wine.
Installing SteamCMD Under Wine
mkdir -p /opt/scum-server/steamcmd
cd /opt/scum-server/steamcmd
wget https://steamcdn-a.akamaihd.net/client/installer/steamcmd.zip
unzip steamcmd.zip
Run SteamCMD to install the SCUM server:
WINEPREFIX=/opt/scum-server/wine wine steamcmd.exe \
+login anonymous \
+force_install_dir "C:\SCUM_Server" \
+app_update 3792580 validate \
+quit
Launching the Server
The install creates files in Wine's virtual C: drive at:
/opt/scum-server/wine/drive_c/SCUM_Server/
Start the server:
WINEPREFIX=/opt/scum-server/wine wine \
"/opt/scum-server/wine/drive_c/SCUM_Server/SCUMServer.exe" \
-log -port=7777
Configuring the Server
Config files are at:
/opt/scum-server/wine/drive_c/SCUM_Server/SCUM/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/ServerSettings.ini
Edit with any Linux text editor. Stop the server before editing, then restart.
Performance Tips for Wine
- DXVK: SCUM uses DirectX rendering. Install DXVK into the Wine prefix to improve performance:
apt install dxvk WINEPREFIX=/opt/scum-server/wine setup_dxvk install - CPU Governor: Set to
performancefor consistent tick rate:sudo cpupower frequency-set -g performance - Avoid running Wine under the root user — create a dedicated
scumsystem user.
See the companion SCUM Linux systemd service guide for automatic startup and crash recovery.
