DayZ Server Setup

DayZ is one of the most popular survival games to host. Here's how to get your server configured.

Basic Configuration

Your DayZ server's main config file is serverDZ.cfg. Key settings:

Setting Description Example
hostname Server name in browser "DustBowl DayZ"
password Join password (blank = public) ""
passwordAdmin Admin/RCON password "your_password"
maxPlayers Max concurrent players 60
verifySignatures Anti-cheat (2 = strict) 2
forceSameBuild Require same game version 1
thirdPersonViewDisabled Force first person 0

Installing Mods (Steam Workshop)

DayZ mods are managed through the Steam Workshop:

  1. Find mods on the Steam Workshop
  2. Note the Workshop ID from the mod's URL
  3. In your panel, add the Workshop IDs to your startup parameters or mod list
  4. The server will download the mods automatically on next restart
  5. Players will need the same mods installed to connect
  • DayZ Expansion — Vehicles, bases, AI, and more
  • CF (Community Framework) — Required by many mods
  • TraderPlus — In-game trading system
  • BuilderItems — Additional base building
  • CodeLock — Combination locks for doors
  • MuchStuffPack — Hundreds of new items

Admin Tools

For server administration, install an admin tool mod:

  • VPP Admin Tools — Teleport, spawn items, manage players
  • COT (Community Online Tools) — Comprehensive admin framework

Loot Economy

DayZ uses an XML-based loot economy. Key files:

  • types.xml — What items spawn, how many, where
  • cfgspawnabletypes.xml — Item attachments and cargo
  • cfgeventspawns.xml — Vehicle and special event spawns

Warning: Editing loot files incorrectly can break item spawning. Always back up before making changes.

Tips

  • Use the -dologs and -adminlog launch parameters for logging
  • Set up automatic restarts every 4-6 hours for stability
  • Pre-load mods on first boot — large mod collections can take 15-30 minutes to download
