Tuning Gameplay Settings and Multipliers

Adjust loot rates, XP multipliers, stack sizes, and other gameplay parameters through WorldDescription.json and WindrosePlus.

Overview

Windrose exposes two layers of gameplay configuration. Core world settings live in WorldDescription.json, which is stored with the world save data. Additional multipliers for loot, XP, and stack size — along with extended server controls — are available through the windrose_plus.json file if you have the WindrosePlus mod installed.

WorldDescription.json

File Location

R5/Saved/SaveProfiles/Default/RocksDB/<version>/Worlds/<world-id>/WorldDescription.json

Replace <version> with the current game version folder name and <world-id> with your world's ID, which matches the WorldIslandId field in ServerDescription.json.

Structure

The file contains a WorldSettings object with two sub-sections:

{
  "WorldSettings": {
    "BoolParameters": {
      "EnablePvP": false,
      "FriendlyFire": false,
      "PermaDeath": false
    },
    "FloatParameters": {
      "ResourceGatherRate": 1.0,
      "ExperienceRate": 1.0,
      "CraftingSpeed": 1.0
    }
  }
}

BoolParameters contains toggle flags for world rules. FloatParameters contains multiplier values where 1.0 is the default rate.

Editing WorldDescription.json

Stop the server before editing this file. The server holds world state in memory and writes it to disk on shutdown — edits made while the server is running may be overwritten.

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Navigate to the file in the panel file manager or via SFTP.
  3. Edit the desired values.
  4. Validate JSON syntax before saving.
  5. Start the server.

WindrosePlus Multipliers

If you have WindrosePlus installed, additional multipliers are available in windrose_plus.json at the container root:

{
  "loot_multiplier": 1.0,
  "xp_multiplier": 1.0,
  "stack_size_multiplier": 1.0
}
Field Default Effect
loot_multiplier 1.0 Scales loot quantity from containers and enemies
xp_multiplier 1.0 Scales XP earned from all sources
stack_size_multiplier 1.0 Scales maximum stack sizes for inventory items

Live Reload

Unlike WorldDescription.json, windrose_plus.json is read live by the server — you do not need to restart after making changes to it. Edit the file, save it, and the changes take effect within a short interval.

For a small group (2–4 players, which is within the 8-player maximum), the following is a reasonable starting point for a more relaxed experience:

{
  "loot_multiplier": 1.5,
  "xp_multiplier": 1.5,
  "stack_size_multiplier": 2.0
}

Avoid setting multipliers above 5.0 — extremely high values can cause inventory and economy issues.

Applying Changes

File Requires restart?
WorldDescription.json Yes — stop server before editing
windrose_plus.json No — read live
ServerDescription.json Yes — stop server before editing

Backup Before Changes

Always back up the world folder before making significant gameplay changes. If a multiplier change causes an issue, you can restore the previous state from backup. See the backup and restore article for procedure.
