How DST food spoilage works

Freshness percentage

Every food item in Don't Starve Together has a freshness value that starts at 100% and drains over time. When it hits 0%, the item becomes Spoiled Food — still edible, but deals health damage and provides no hunger. Fresh food gives a small sanity bonus when eaten.

Storage multipliers

An Ice Box multiplies freshness duration by roughly 3.33x. A Salt Box (Shipwrecked/DST) extends it to 5x. Bundled Supplies (crafted with Trusty Tape) give the largest boost at ~6.67x — ideal for long expeditions away from base.

Day length & server settings

Default DST servers run at 8 real minutes per game day. "Fast" servers (typically used for quick seasonal runs) use 4 min/day, while modded or survival-focused servers often use 12 min/day. Changing day length doesn't affect game-day freshness — only the real-world time changes.

Crock Pot dishes

Cooked dishes from the Crock Pot generally spoil at the same rate as raw ingredients — but their real-time freshness depends on day length just like everything else. Cooking food never resets its spoilage clock, so cook only what you'll eat soon.
