Insurgency: Sandstorm Commander Fire Support Reference
Reference card for every Commander fire support call — deploy time, radius, duration, and tactical tips. Includes the critical coordination mechanics every Commander and Observer must know.
Commander / Observer Coordination Rules
- 1. Commander and Observer must be within 10 metres of each other to call fire support.
- 2. Commander calls the strike — Observer must confirm. Both must complete their voice lines without interruption.
- 3. If either player is suppressed or killed during the voice lines, the call is aborted — no cooldown refund.
- 4. Chemical Mortar: players without a gas mask take 100% damage. Always warn teammates before calling.
Smoke Artillery
SecurityRadius / Range
~12m
Deploy Time
~10s
Duration / Effect
~45s
Excellent for blocking enemy sightlines and covering team advances. Large smoke cloud obscures movement effectively. Combine with an immediate push while smoke is active.
Explosive Artillery
SecurityRadius / Range
~6m
Deploy Time
~15s
Duration / Effect
Instant
High-damage concentrated strike. Best used on known enemy positions or defensive emplacements. The smaller radius means you need accurate placement — use the target marker carefully.
A-10 Strafe
SecurityRadius / Range
~13.7m line
Deploy Time
~20s
Duration / Effect
~5s pass
Runs along a line determined by the target marker angle. Devastating against enemies grouped in a corridor or advancing along a single lane. Requires a target marker from the Observer.
Cleric (Minigun Helicopter)
SecurityRadius / Range
~20m
Deploy Time
~30s
Duration / Effect
~30s
Persistent area suppression — forces enemies to take cover and disrupts pushes. Long deploy time means you need to call it before contact, not during. Excellent for defending captured objectives.
Assassin (Apache Gunship)
SecurityRadius / Range
~8m
Deploy Time
~30s
Duration / Effect
~15s
High-precision attack helicopter strike. Best for hardened positions or vehicle-equivalent structures. The long deploy time makes it risky if enemy positions shift — target something static.
Smoke Mortar
InsurgentsRadius / Range
~10m
Deploy Time
~8s
Duration / Effect
~40s
Fast-deploying smoke for quick area denial. Use it to cover flanking routes or protect a retreat. Faster deploy than Security smoke makes it more reactive in fast-moving firefights.
Explosive Mortar
InsurgentsRadius / Range
~8m
Deploy Time
~10s
Duration / Effect
Instant
Standard indirect fire lethal strike. Larger radius than Security's explosive artillery makes it slightly more forgiving on placement. High damage against unshielded enemies.
Chemical Mortar
InsurgentsRadius / Range
~9m
Deploy Time
~10s
Duration / Effect
~30s
Creates a sustained gas cloud that kills players without gas masks. Announce before calling every time — no exceptions. Devastating on objectives when defenders are unequipped.
Rocket Barrage
InsurgentsRadius / Range
~15m+
Deploy Time
~12s
Duration / Effect
~8s
Widest area coverage of all Insurgent fire support. Multiple rockets saturate a zone rapidly. Lower precision means it is best used on clustered objective areas rather than individual targets.
Bomber Drone
InsurgentsRadius / Range
~5m
Deploy Time
~15s
Duration / Effect
Instant
Requires visual confirmation of target. Precision drone strike suitable for single high-value targets or small groups. The drone can be shot down before impact — best used when enemy is occupied.
Explosive Drone
InsurgentsRadius / Range
~4m
Deploy Time
~10s
Duration / Effect
Instant
Kamikaze drone that detonates on impact. Very precise but can be shot down. Effective against enemies in cover who cannot easily dodge. Coordinate with a simultaneous push to maximize impact.
Combo Tips
Smoke + Explosive Artillery
Call smoke first to deny retreat routes, then follow with explosive into the covered zone. Enemies must choose between holding position or running into the smoke.
Chemical Mortar on Objectives
Most effective when defenders haven't purchased gas masks. Check the team's loadouts before calling — always announce it over voice chat first.
Rocket Barrage (Wide Area Saturation)
Highest area coverage of all Insurgent supports but lowest precision. Best on clustered objectives or chokepoint areas — avoid using it near friendly positions.
A-10 Strafe (Directional Planning)
The A-10 runs along a line — target marker placement determines the attack vector. Pre-plan the angle to maximize hits along enemy lines of advance.
