How it works
Each anvil combine has a cost equal to the sum of enchantment values (each enchantment's base cost times its level) plus the prior work penalty of both input items.
The prior work penalty doubles every time an item is used in an anvil (0, 1, 3, 7, 15, 31…), so the order you combine books matters a lot — combining shallow trees first keeps penalties balanced and minimizes the final cost.
In survival, any single combine costing 40 or more levels shows "Too Expensive!" and is blocked. This calculator brute-forces all permutations for up to 6 enchantments (that's 720 orderings) and returns the one with the lowest total XP cost.
Note: this tool is illustrative. Exact costs can vary by server configuration — some servers use datapacks or plugins that tweak anvil multipliers, or run commands/creative mode which bypass the 39-level cap.
