Picking an occupation
Unemployed gives the most free points (+8) for maximum trait flexibility. Specialized jobs like Veteran or Blacksmith offer unique skill boosts but start in negative points — balance them with negative traits.
Point balance rule
You cannot spawn until your Points Remaining is exactly 0 or higher. Use cheap negative traits like Smoker (+2), Slow Reader (+2), or High Thirst (+1) to fine-tune your budget without major downsides.
Best value traits
Fast Learner (-6) is widely considered the best trait in the game — every skill levels up faster. Athletic (-10) and Strong (-10) are expensive but provide powerful combat and carry advantages.
B42 new traits
Build 42 added crafting-focused traits: Keen Cook, Artisan, Mason, Whittler, Inventive, Crafty, and Wilderness Knowledge. These boost the new crafting skill trees and are excellent for long-term survival playthroughs.
