SOTF Enemy & Mutant Reference
Searchable guide to every enemy type in Sons of the Forest. Filter by type or location to find counter-strategies before you head into danger. No HP values — the game doesn't expose these numbers publicly.
Normal Cannibal
CannibalForestBeachesReacts to noise, light, and movement. Found near rivers, lakes, and camps. Will observe before attacking, especially early game.
Fire and molotovs are highly effective. Headshots deal bonus damage. Avoid engaging large groups without cover.
Red Cannibal (Painted)
CannibalForestMore aggressive variant with red body paint. Tends to attack faster and more fearlessly than normal cannibals.
Same counters as normal — fire arrows, headshots, and molotovs. Prioritize these in mixed groups.
Masked Cannibal
CannibalForestCavesWears a bone/skin mask. Slightly more durable. Can lead charges on your base during raids.
Compound bow or shotgun to break through. Fire arrows effective for groups.
Elite Cannibal
CannibalForestCavesHigh-health, armored cannibal variant. Coordinates attacks with others and is noticeably harder to kill.
Explosives, shotgun at close range, or sustained fire arrow volleys. Avoid melee unless at full Strength.
Fingers
MutantCavesBunkersFast-moving cave-dwelling mutant with elongated fingers. Swarm in groups and close distance rapidly. Found in dark cave systems.
Shotgun or automatic weapons at close range. Retreat to a choke point to avoid being surrounded.
Twins
MutantCavesForestConjoined mutant pair. Can use ranged attacks (spit/throw) or perform jumping lunge attacks. Erratic movement makes them hard to track.
Ranged weapons to stay out of lunge range, or dodge and counter the jump attack. Fire arrows work well.
Sluggy
MutantCavesLabsSlow, bloated mutant with high durability. Absorbs significant damage before going down. Poses less agility threat but can soak hits.
Fire arrows and explosives deal the most damage. Don't waste pistol ammo — use your heaviest resources.
Mutant Babies
MutantCavesBunkersSwarms of small fast mutants that attack in overwhelming numbers. Low individual threat but dangerous in groups.
Grenades, molotovs, or any AoE explosive. A single well-placed molotov can clear a swarm.
Demon (Mutant)
MutantCavesLabsDark, shadowy mutant that regenerates health over time if not burned. Highly resistant to conventional damage without fire.
Cross repel first, then immediately apply fire (fire arrows, molotov, torch). Without fire it will simply regenerate.
Puffton
MutantForestCavesBloated mutant that puffs up before attacking. Once spotted, becomes aggressive. Moderate speed.
Shotgun if it spots you (urgent damage needed). Bow or katana from stealth before it reacts.
Creepy Virginia
MutantLabsBunkersHostile multi-limbed mutant version distinct from companion Virginia. Aggressive and fast-moving in enclosed spaces.
Compound bow is particularly effective. Maintain distance and use corridors to limit her mobility.
Holey
MutantCavesBizarre mutant with holes in its body. Can absorb small arms fire through the holes ineffectively.
Bait it with sound or movement, then use an axe at close range or explosives. Avoid sustained small-caliber fire.
Caterpillar Mutant
MutantLabsCavesLong segmented mutant that moves in an undulating pattern. Can be difficult to track in tight corridors.
Stun gun to stop movement, then katana for quick kills. Explosives also effective in open areas.
Legsy
MutantCavesLabsMutant composed primarily of legs with unusual locomotion. Surprisingly fast despite its strange form.
Fire arrows are the most reliable counter. Keep moving and don't let it close distance.
Puffton Boss
BossBunkersOversized Puffton encountered as a boss encounter. Significantly more health and damage than the standard variant.
Shotgun and explosive ammo are most effective. Keep moving to avoid charge attacks. Stock up before entering.
Demon Boss
BossLabsPowerful demon boss with the same regeneration mechanic as standard demons but with much greater HP and damage.
Fire is mandatory — cross repel first, then sustained fire arrows or molotovs. Bring multiple fire sources.
Gold Armor Guardian
BossLabsArmored boss guarding key story items. Heavy armor requires high-penetration weapons to deal effective damage.
Explosives, shotgun slug rounds, and fire arrows. Conventional small arms are ineffective against the armor.
