SS13 Conflict Escalation Guide

The #1 cause of self-antag bans in SS13 is escalating conflict too fast — killing someone for a minor slight that warranted a shove at most. Use this guide to understand what response is appropriate for any situation.

Reflects TG-style rules used by TGStation, Paradise Station, BeeStation, and most MRP/HRP servers.

What Happened? — Find Your Situation

TG-Style Escalation Tiers

Tier 0

Ignore

No response needed. Walking away is always valid.

Examples: Words, insults, minor annoyances

Tier 1

Verbal Response

Respond with words — threats, demands, or IC complaints to security.

Examples: Shouting at someone, threatening to call security, radioing a complaint

Tier 2

Shove / Grab / Detain

Physical but non-damaging. Push back, grab to restrain, or briefly detain.

Examples: Shoving someone away, handcuffing a thief, pushing them out of an area

Tier 3

Non-Lethal Force

Damaging but not kill-intent. Stun weapons, flashes, harm intent melee to disable.

Examples: Flashing, stunning with taser, hitting with a bat (harm intent, not kill)

Tier 4

Lethal Intent

Kill intent attacks. Only justified if the target already used Tier 3+ on you, or is an antag.

Examples: Stabbing with kill intent, shooting with lethal ammo, robust murder

Tier 5

Call for Help

Involve station authority. Security, captain, or head of department intervention.

Examples: Calling security over radio, filing a report, requesting captain escalation

Special Situations

Self-Defense — Skipping Tiers

If someone immediately opens with Tier 3 or 4 force (pulls a weapon, starts beating you with kill intent), you may match their tier immediately. You do not need to shove first before defending yourself with a stun.

Antagonists

Confirmed antags (traitors, changelings, cultists, etc.) may use lethal force to complete objectives and protect their identity. Murderboning (killing everyone with no objective tie) is still punishable on MRP/HRP servers.

Security vs. Criminals

Security must always use the minimum effective force. For non-violent criminals: stun and brig. Lethal force on non-violent suspects is excessive force. Security is held to a higher RP standard than regular crew.

Greytide (Assistant Mischief)

Assistants being annoying (minor theft, breaking windows, following you) is Tier 1-2 at most. Security should handle it. Civilians cannot apply Tier 3+ to greytiders no matter how annoying they are.

Escalation Memory

If someone Tier 3'd you earlier in the round, conflict memory persists. You may treat them with elevated caution later in the same round. However, this doesn't justify preemptive lethal strikes without them doing anything new.

Common Self-Antagging Mistakes

What Happened What You Did Verdict
Someone stole your ID card You stabbed them to death with a pocket knife Self-antag ban
Someone bumped into you repeatedly You beat them unconscious with your toolbox Self-antag ban
Someone shoved you once You shoved them back and called security Correct response
Someone pulled a gun on you You immediately hit them with a stun baton Correct response
Greytide assistant broke a window near you You pushed them and told them to stop Correct response
Greytide assistant kept following you You tasered them and dragged them to security Borderline — call sec instead
Someone attacked you, then ran away You chased them for 5 minutes and killed them Excessive — disengage when threat ends
You are confirmed traitor with a kill objective You killed your target and one witness Acceptable (objective-tied)
