VS Smithing Voxel Reference
Vintage Story's voxel smithing system is unlike anything else in survival games. Every item is smithed voxel-by-voxel on an anvil. Use this reference to plan your smithing projects, understand anvil tiers, and know what the helve hammer can automate.

Anvil Tier Compatibility
Anvils are tiered — you need a stronger anvil to work harder metals. Each tier can work all metals below it too.

Metals That Cannot Be Smithed into Tools
These metals are decorative or used for other crafting purposes — they cannot be smithed into tool heads or weapons on an anvil.
Helve Hammer — Automation Guide
The helve hammer automates repetitive smithing tasks but has important limitations.
Can Automate
- Refine Iron Bloom → cast iron or wrought iron ingots
- Refine Blister Steel → steel ingots
- Auto-smith ingots into Metal Plates (2-ingot flat items)
Cannot Automate
- Complex voxel shapes (tool heads, weapon blades)
- Items requiring precise shaping (axe, sword, etc.)
- Any item over 2 ingots requiring specific voxel patterns
