VRChat Moderation Reference & Decision Tree
A practical guide to every moderation action available in VRChat — when to use it, what it does, and known platform gaps with documented workarounds.
Decision Tree: Someone Is Causing Problems
Work through these levels in order. Escalate only if the previous step didn't resolve the issue.
Available Moderation Actions
Instance-Level Actions
Available to anyone with the "Manage Instances" permission (or the instance creator).
Warn
Sends an on-screen warning pop-up visible only to the target user.
Mute
Silences the user's microphone for everyone in the instance.
Kick
Removes the user from the current instance. They can re-join unless banned.
Report
Submits a report to VRChat's trust system, potentially lowering the user's trust rank.
Group-Level Actions
Require specific group role permissions.
Kick from group
Requires: Remove Members
Removes group membership. The user can be re-invited.
Ban from group
Requires: Ban Members
Permanently blocks the user from joining any group instance. Adds to ban list.
Role assignment
Requires: Manage Members
Add or remove roles below your own tier. Use to demote a rule-breaker before kicking.
Known Platform Gaps
These are documented limitations in VRChat's moderation tooling (as of 2025–2026), with practical workarounds.
Ban list is not searchable
The group ban list has no search or filter. Admins must scroll through the entire list to find a specific user.
Workaround: Maintain a secondary ban record in a private Discord channel or Google Sheet. Format: username | ban date | reason. Cross-reference before re-inviting anyone.
Audit log expires after 30 days
VRChat only retains the group audit log for 30 days. Actions older than that cannot be reviewed in-platform.
Workaround: Export or manually copy significant moderation actions into your external log immediately. Especially important for ban justifications.
No pre-emptive world-level ban
You cannot ban a specific user from a group world before they actually join an instance. There is no world-level blocklist separate from the group ban.
Workaround: If you know a banned user has alt accounts, use the VRChat trust system report to flag those accounts too. Keep greeters in instances during high-risk events.
Banned user sees no reason
When a user is group-banned, VRChat shows them only that they cannot join — no reason or appeal path is displayed.
Workaround: If you want transparency, reach out via Discord DM with a brief explanation. This is optional but reduces confusion and angry support pings.
Escalation Log Template
Copy this template into a private moderation Discord channel or Google Sheet for each incident. VRChat's audit log expires after 30 days — keep your own records.
