VRChat Avatar Upload Readiness Checklist

Run through this checklist before every upload — PC and Quest separately. Many creators forget that Quest requires a completely separate upload with stricter limits.

PC Upload Limits

  • Max uncompressed upload: 200 MB
  • Max cached download: 500 MB
  • Thumbnail: 800×600 recommended
  • Shaders: Any Unity shader
  • Components: Full PhysBones support

Quest Upload Limits (Stricter)

  • Max upload: 10 MB
  • Max cached download: 40 MB
  • Shaders: Quest-compatible only (Standard, Mobile/Bumped Diffuse, etc.)
  • No PC-only components (old Dynamic Bones, desktop particles)
  • Requires separate upload from PC

PC Checklist

  • Performance rank checked (PC)

Use the Avatar Rank Checker tool above.

  • File size under 200 MB uncompressed

Check Unity build size before upload.

  • Thumbnail set (800×600 recommended)

Add via the VRChat SDK panel before upload.

  • All materials have valid shaders assigned

Pink materials = missing or broken shader.

  • PhysBones configured (not old Dynamic Bones)

Old Dynamic Bones SDK will reject the upload.

  • Expression menu tested in Unity play mode

Enter play mode and confirm all toggles work.

  • Write Defaults consistent across all animator states

All ON or all OFF — mixing causes pose issues.

  • PhysBone colliders not overlapping world geometry

Test in a flat world before uploading.

  • Avatar has a valid viewpoint set

The VRChatd viewpoint sphere must be placed at eye level.

  • VRChat SDK version matches Unity project version

Mismatched SDK versions cause silent upload failures.

Common Upload Mistakes

  • ✗Uploading PC version only and forgetting Quest — Quest players will see the fallback robot avatar.
  • ✗Inconsistent Write Defaults across animator states — causes visible T-pose or pose blending issues.
  • ✗Using non-Quest shaders in the Quest upload — will produce pink/missing material errors.
  • ✗PhysBone colliders overlapping with world geometry — causes jitter artifacts in-world.
