Breeding in vanilla ARK: Survival Evolved is notoriously time-consuming: raising a baby Giganotosaurus takes over 11 real-world days. Customizing breeding rates creates an enjoyable, balanced ecosystem for your community. However, breeding settings require precise mathematical balancing across two different configuration files.
The Critical Rule: Which File Controls Which Setting?
The most common mistake administrators make is placing all breeding settings in GameUserSettings.ini. In reality:
| Setting Key | Belongs In File | Section Header | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
MatingIntervalMultiplier |
GameUserSettings.ini | [ServerSettings] |
Cooldown period between female dino matings (lower = faster). |
EggHatchSpeedMultiplier |
Game.ini | [/Script/ShooterGame.ShooterGameMode] |
Incubation and gestation speed (higher = faster). |
BabyMatureSpeedMultiplier |
Game.ini | [/Script/ShooterGame.ShooterGameMode] |
Time required for babies to reach adulthood (higher = faster). |
BabyCuddleIntervalMultiplier |
Game.ini | [/Script/ShooterGame.ShooterGameMode] |
Frequency of imprinting cuddle requests (lower = more frequent). |
BabyCuddleGracePeriodMultiplier |
Game.ini | [/Script/ShooterGame.ShooterGameMode] |
Grace period before imprint percentage begins degrading. |
BabyFoodConsumptionSpeedMultiplier |
Game.ini | [/Script/ShooterGame.ShooterGameMode] |
How fast baby dinos consume food (lower = less trough babysitting). |
The 100% Imprint Math Equation
When you increase BabyMatureSpeedMultiplier by a factor of \(X\), creatures mature \(X\) times faster. If you do not adjust BabyCuddleIntervalMultiplier proportionally, creatures will reach adulthood before their first cuddle window arrives, making 100% imprinting impossible!
The golden rule of ARK breeding configuration:
BabyCuddleIntervalMultiplier ≈ 1 / BabyMatureSpeedMultiplier
For example, if maturation is set to 10.0 (10x faster), cuddle interval should be roughly 0.1 (every 48 minutes instead of every 8 hours).
Tested and Balanced Breeding Configurations
Balanced Community Preset (5x Maturation)
Eggs hatch in minutes, maturation takes hours instead of days, and babies require 2 to 3 cuddles for 100% imprint:
In GameUserSettings.ini:
[ServerSettings]
MatingIntervalMultiplier=0.2
In Game.ini:
[/Script/ShooterGame.ShooterGameMode]
EggHatchSpeedMultiplier=5.0
BabyMatureSpeedMultiplier=5.0
BabyCuddleIntervalMultiplier=0.2
BabyCuddleGracePeriodMultiplier=2.0
BabyFoodConsumptionSpeedMultiplier=0.5
Fast-Paced PvP Preset (15x Maturation)
Designed for fast weekend breeding projects where large dinos mature in under 3 hours:
In GameUserSettings.ini:
[ServerSettings]
MatingIntervalMultiplier=0.1
In Game.ini:
[/Script/ShooterGame.ShooterGameMode]
EggHatchSpeedMultiplier=15.0
BabyMatureSpeedMultiplier=15.0
BabyCuddleIntervalMultiplier=0.067
BabyCuddleGracePeriodMultiplier=3.0
BabyFoodConsumptionSpeedMultiplier=0.3
Applying Breeding Configurations in DustBowl Warden
- Open DustBowl Warden and Stop your ARK server.
- In the File Manager, open
ShooterGame/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/GameUserSettings.iniand addMatingIntervalMultiplierunder[ServerSettings]. Save. - In the File Manager, open
ShooterGame/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/Game.ini. - Ensure the
[/Script/ShooterGame.ShooterGameMode]header exists, then paste your maturation and cuddle multipliers. Save. - Start your server. Existing eggs and pregnant creatures will apply new rates upon their next cycle.
