How to Configure Your Clone Hero Server
Clone Hero server configuration is done entirely through startup arguments — no config file. Here's what each argument does and how to set them in your DustBowl.Games control panel.
No Config File — It's All Startup Arguments
Clone Hero's dedicated server has no separate config file. Every setting is passed as an argument when the server starts. In your DustBowl.Games control panel, these are set in the Startup Parameters section.
The Four Settings
Server Name (-n)
-n "My Clone Hero Server"
The display name players see when connecting. Maximum 80 characters. Wrap in quotes if the name contains spaces — without quotes, the server treats each word as a separate argument and the name breaks.
Port (-p)
-p 14242
The UDP port the server listens on. Default is 14242. Change this if you need to avoid a port conflict, or if you're running multiple Clone Hero instances on the same machine (each needs its own port).
Log Level (-l)
-l 3
Controls how much the server logs. Range is 0–4:
| Level | Output |
|---|---|
| 0 | Silent — nothing logged |
| 1 | Errors only |
| 2 | Warnings and errors |
| 3 | Normal operation (recommended) |
| 4 | Verbose — use for troubleshooting |
Use 2 or 3 for day-to-day operation. Flip to 4 when diagnosing connection problems.
Password (-np or -ps)
No password:
-np
With password:
-ps YourPassword
One of these is required. You can't leave both out. See How to Password Protect Your Clone Hero Server for password rules.
Full Example Launch Command
./Server -l 3 -n "My Clone Hero Server" -p 14242 -np
With a password:
./Server -l 3 -n "My Clone Hero Server" -p 14242 -ps MyPassword123
Applying Changes
The server reads startup arguments at launch only. Restart the server after changing any parameter — there's no way to apply changes to a running server.
