CS2 High Ping and Packet Loss

Diagnose and fix high ping or packet loss on your CS2 server. Covers how to identify whether the problem is server-side or client-side, check your net_graph, change server region, and escalate to support with traceroutes.

Measuring Your Connection

Open the developer console (`) and type:

net_graph 1

This overlays real-time network statistics. Key values to watch:

Metric Healthy Concerning
ping < 70ms > 100ms
loss 0% > 1%
choke 0% > 0%
sv < 4ms > 8ms
  • loss — packets dropped between you and the server
  • choke — server is sending updates slower than your rate settings request (server-side load)
  • sv — server simulation time (high = overloaded server)

Is It You or the Server?

Server-wide problem (affects all players):

  • All players report high ping or rubber-banding simultaneously
  • High choke or sv values in net_graph
  • → Likely a server-side issue: overloaded server, network congestion at datacenter, or a faulty plugin

Individual problem (just one player):

  • Only one player has high ping while others are fine
  • That player's loss is high but choke and sv are fine
  • → Likely a client-side issue: player's internet, ISP routing, local network congestion, WiFi

Client-Side Fixes

  1. Switch to wired Ethernet — WiFi introduces jitter and packet loss. A wired connection is almost always better for competitive gaming.
  2. Close background apps — downloads, streaming, video calls, and game updates compete for bandwidth.
  3. Restart your router — clears NAT tables and routing caches.
  4. Try a different DNS server — use 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) or 8.8.8.8 (Google) instead of your ISP's default.
  5. Disable QoS / traffic shaping — some routers throttle gaming traffic. Check your router's QoS settings.

Server-Side Fixes

Change server location — the most impactful change. Pick a datacenter geographically closer to your players. See CS2 Server Location Options.

Disable or remove plugins — a poorly coded plugin can spike CPU usage every tick, raising sv and causing choke. Remove plugins one at a time to isolate the cause.

Reduce player count — more players = more simulation work. If sv is high with 20 players but fine with 10, you may need a higher-tier server.

Escalating to Support

If you've ruled out client-side causes and the problem is ongoing, jump into our Discord at discord.dustbowl.games and open a support ticket. Bring:

  • A traceroute from an affected player to your server IP
    • Windows: run tracert YOUR.SERVER.IP in Command Prompt
    • Mac/Linux: run traceroute YOUR.SERVER.IP
    • Paste the output at pastebin.com and drop the link in the ticket
  • When it started (rough time + timezone)
  • How many players are affected and whether it's constant or comes and goes
  • A net_graph screenshot showing your sv:, loss:, and choke: values

The traceroute tells us where in the path the problem lives. More often than not it's an upstream ISP backbone issue that a region switch can work around — the traceroute makes that call obvious.
