Change Max Players Per Game Mode in CS2
CS2 enforces per-mode player limits in gamemodes_server.txt regardless of your server's slot count. Edit the maxplayers value for competitive, casual, or deathmatch to run 10-player scrims, 1v1s, or larger servers.
Why Doesn't My Server Fill to Its Slot Limit?
CS2 enforces maximum player counts per game mode inside gamemodes_server.txt, independently of how many slots your server plan includes. For example, the default competitive mode cap is 10 even if you have a 20-slot server.
To allow more players, you must edit this config file.
Step 1: Open gamemodes_server.txt
In your AMP or WISP panel, open the File Manager and locate gamemodes_server.txt in the server root. Open it for editing.
Step 2: Find and Change maxplayers
The file contains blocks per game mode. Find the mode you're using and locate its maxplayers value:
"competitive"
{
"maxplayers" "10"
...
}
Change 10 to your desired player count. Examples:
| Setup | Value |
|---|---|
| Standard 5v5 | 10 |
| 6v6 | 12 |
| 10v10 | 20 |
| 1v1 (arena) | 2 |
| Casual (default) | 20 |
| Deathmatch (default) | 20 |
Step 3: Save and Restart
Save the file and restart your server from the AMP or WISP panel console. The new cap takes effect on the next server boot.
Heads Up: Competitive Mode and Team Colors
Valve's competitive mode breaks team-color display when maxplayers goes above 10 — players won't see the colored outline on teammates on the HUD. This is a Valve engine limitation, not a config error.
If you're running 6v6 or bigger and team colors matter, switch to Casual mode instead — it supports up to 20 players and keeps team colors working.
