Resetting Server Economy Without a Full Wipe

Selectively reset loot spawns, vehicle positions, or player characters independently using DayZ's persistent storage folder structure.

Overview

DayZ's persistent state is stored in binary files under server_profile/storage/. Unlike a full server wipe, you can selectively reset only the loot economy, only vehicles, or only player characters by deleting the corresponding subfolders. This lets you refresh the economy or fix corruption without forcing all players to start over.

Storage Folder Structure

server_profile/
  storage/
characters/ ← Player inventory and health state
loot/ ← World loot positions and quantities
vehicles/ ← Vehicle positions and damage states
territory/ ← Base building persistence (if enabled)

Always stop the server before deleting any storage files. Deleting while the server is running can cause corruption.

Reset Types

Economy-Only Reset (Loot Respawn)

Deletes all world loot state. On next startup the server rebuilds the loot economy from scratch using types.xml values. Players and vehicles are unaffected.

# Stop server first
rm -rf server_profile/storage/loot/

Use this when:

  • Loot has become heavily concentrated in one area
  • You changed types.xml and want a clean distribution
  • The economy feels depleted after a long server run

Vehicle Reset

Deletes all vehicle persistence. All vehicles respawn at their original map positions with full health and default configuration.

rm -rf server_profile/storage/vehicles/

Character-Only Wipe

Deletes all player inventories and positions. Players log in as fresh spawns. World loot and vehicles are preserved.

rm -rf server_profile/storage/characters/

Use this for:

  • Seasonal resets where the world stays intact
  • Fixing mass character corruption after a bad crash

Full Wipe

Deletes all persistent state. The server starts completely fresh.

rm -rf server_profile/storage/

Backup Before Wiping

Always back up before deleting. In the WISP/Pterodactyl panel, use the backup feature or compress the folder:

tar -czf storage_backup_$(date +%Y%m%d).tar.gz server_profile/storage/

Store backups outside the server directory so a panel wipe does not remove them.

After the Reset

  1. Start the server
  2. The missing storage folders are recreated automatically on first run
  3. Loot begins spawning per types.xml nominal values over the first few minutes

The initial loot spread takes 5–15 minutes to reach nominal values as the spawn engine runs its first cycle. Players logging in immediately after a wipe will find sparse loot — this is normal.

Verifying the Reset Worked

Check server_profile/logs/script.log after startup. You should see economy initialization messages:

Economy: Init start
Economy: Init complete, X items placed

If you see errors referencing missing storage files, they are benign — the server creates them on first run.

Scheduled Economy Resets

Some servers reset the economy weekly without wiping characters. This can be automated with a panel scheduled task:

  1. Scheduled task: stop server
  2. Scheduled task: delete storage/loot/ and storage/vehicles/
  3. Scheduled task: start server
