Updating FXServer Artifacts

How to safely update your FXServer binaries to the latest artifact build without losing your server configuration.

Overview

FiveM releases artifact builds continuously. Staying on a recent build ensures you get security patches, new native functions, and compatibility with the latest GTA Online updates (FiveM ships independent of GTA Online but tracks Rockstar's title update cadence). Updates only affect the binaries in the server/ directory — your server-data/, server.cfg, and resources are untouched.

Artifact Channels

Both Linux and Windows have a single artifact listing page. There is no separate stable/beta split at the artifact level; "recommended" builds are flagged on the listing page and are safe for production use.

  • Linux: https://runtime.fivem.net/artifacts/fivem/build_proot_linux/master/
  • Windows: https://runtime.fivem.net/artifacts/fivem/build_server_windows/master/

Build numbers increment with each release. Higher number = newer build.

Before You Update

  1. Announce a restart window to connected players if your server is live.
  2. Stop FXServer from txAdmin (Stop Server button) or from the panel.
  3. Back up the current server/ directory if you want a quick rollback path:
cp -r ~/FXServer/server ~/FXServer/server-backup-$(date +%Y%m%d)

Your server-data/ directory does not need to be backed up for the update itself, but regular backups are good practice.

Updating on Linux

# Download the new artifact
cd /tmp
wget https://runtime.fivem.net/artifacts/fivem/build_proot_linux/master/BUILDNUMBER-HASH/fx.tar.xz

# Clear old binaries (keep the directory)
rm -rf ~/FXServer/server/*

# Extract the new build
tar xf fx.tar.xz -C ~/FXServer/server/

# Clean up
rm /tmp/fx.tar.xz

Replace BUILDNUMBER-HASH with the build you selected from the artifact listing.

Updating on Windows

  1. Download the new .zip from the Windows artifact page.
  2. Stop FXServer if it is running.
  3. Delete the contents of server\ (not the folder itself).
  4. Extract the new .zip into server\.
  5. Start FXServer.

Pterodactyl / WISP Panel — Egg-Managed Updates

If your panel egg manages the artifact download automatically:

  1. In the panel, go to Startup → find the BUILD_NUMBER (or equivalent) variable.
  2. Change the value to the new build number.
  3. Click Reinstall (or the equivalent action that re-runs the egg install script).
  4. The egg downloads the new artifact and replaces the binaries without touching server-data/.

Check whether your egg preserves server-data/ during reinstall before proceeding. Most FiveM eggs do, but verify with your hosting provider if unsure.

Verifying the Update

Start FXServer and look for the build version in the first lines of the txAdmin console output:

citizen-server-impl: FXServer b9290

The build number confirms which artifact is running.

Rolling Back

If a new build causes issues:

  1. Stop FXServer.
  2. Remove the new binaries from server/.
  3. Restore the backup, or re-download the previous build number from the artifact page.
  4. Start FXServer.

Keeping cfx-server-data Updated

The server-data/ repository also receives occasional updates (new default resources, updated server.cfg templates). Pull the latest changes periodically:

cd ~/FXServer/server-data
git pull

Do not blindly overwrite server.cfg — git pull will merge changes, but review them before restarting if you have customised the defaults.
