HogWarp Port Forwarding and Firewall Setup

HogWarp uses a single port for all communication between the server and clients. Getting this port open correctly is essential — without it, your server will either fail to register with the public server list or players will be unable to connect even after finding it.

Default Port

Port Protocol Purpose
11778 TCP + UDP All HogWarp server traffic

HogWarp uses port 11778 on both TCP and UDP. Both protocols must be open.

How Players Connect

Unlike most game servers, HogWarp does not support direct IP connections. Players find servers exclusively through the in-game overlay at presence.hogwarp.com. When your server starts, it registers itself with this service — that registration requires your server to be reachable on port 11778 from the internet.

If port 11778 is blocked:

  • The server may start locally but fail to register on the public list
  • Players who find your server in the list will be unable to join

DustBowl.Games Customers

On DustBowl.Games, your server is assigned a public IP address and the required ports are pre-configured. Port 11778 (TCP + UDP) is open by default for HogWarp servers — you do not need to configure firewall rules manually.

If your server is not appearing in the public list, verify that:

  1. Your API_KEY is correct (see Setting Up Your HogWarp API Key)
  2. The server started without errors in the console log

Self-Hosted / VPS Setup

If you are running your own Linux VPS, you need to open port 11778 in both your OS firewall and any cloud provider security group.

UFW (Ubuntu / Debian)

sudo ufw allow 11778/tcp
sudo ufw allow 11778/udp
sudo ufw reload

firewalld (CentOS / Rocky Linux)

sudo firewall-cmd --permanent --add-port=11778/tcp
sudo firewall-cmd --permanent --add-port=11778/udp
sudo firewall-cmd --reload

iptables

sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 11778 -j ACCEPT
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p udp --dport 11778 -j ACCEPT
sudo iptables-save

Cloud Provider Security Groups

If your VPS is hosted on AWS, GCP, Azure, Hetzner, or a similar provider, you also need to add an inbound rule in the provider's network/security group panel:

  • Type: Custom TCP + Custom UDP
  • Port range: 11778
  • Source: 0.0.0.0/0 (anywhere)

Verifying the Port Is Open

From a separate machine, you can test whether the port is reachable:

# Test TCP
nc -zv YOUR_SERVER_IP 11778

# Or use nmap
nmap -p 11778 YOUR_SERVER_IP

If the port shows as filtered or closed, re-check your firewall rules and cloud security groups.
