How to Set Up and Manage a Whitelist

Enable the whitelist on your Minecraft server to control exactly who can join, and manage it via commands or by editing whitelist.json directly.

What Is the Whitelist?

The whitelist is a security allowlist for your Minecraft server. When enabled, only players whose verified usernames and UUIDs are registered on the list can connect. Any unlisted player attempting to join is immediately disconnected with the message "You are not whitelisted on this server!".

Step 1: Enable the Whitelist

Option A: Via DustBowl Warden File Manager

  1. In the DustBowl Warden Panel, navigate to File Manager.
  2. Open server.properties in the root directory.
  3. Set:
    white-list=true

  4. Click Save Content and restart the server.

Option B: Via Live Console

In the Warden Console tab, type:

whitelist on

The whitelist activates immediately without requiring a reboot.

Step 2: Adding and Removing Players

Execute whitelist management commands from the Warden Console (no leading /) or in-game as an operator:

Action Console Command In-Game Command Effect
Add Player whitelist add PlayerName /whitelist add PlayerName Fetches the player's Mojang UUID and appends it to whitelist.json.
Remove Player whitelist remove PlayerName /whitelist remove PlayerName Removes the player from whitelist.json.
List Allowed whitelist list /whitelist list Displays all currently whitelisted usernames.
Toggle Off whitelist off /whitelist off Temporarily opens the server to all players without deleting your list.
Toggle On whitelist on /whitelist on Re-enables allowlist enforcement.
Reload List whitelist reload /whitelist reload Re-reads whitelist.json from disk after manual file edits.

Step 3: Editing whitelist.json Directly & Batch Generation

For large communities, adding players one-by-one via console commands is slow. You can generate a complete whitelist.json in seconds:

  1. Open our free Minecraft Whitelist JSON Generator.
  2. Paste a list of usernames. The tool automatically fetches verified UUIDs from Mojang's API and outputs valid JSON:
    [
      {
        "uuid": "069a79f4-44e9-4726-a5be-fca90e38aaf5",
        "name": "PlayerOne"
      },
      {
        "uuid": "853c80ef-3c37-49fd-aa49-938b674adae6",
        "name": "PlayerTwo"
      }
    ]

  3. In DustBowl Warden, open File Manager and click whitelist.json.
  4. Paste the generated JSON content and click Save Content.
  5. In the Warden Console, run:
    whitelist reload

Online Mode vs Offline Mode Considerations

  • Online Mode (online-mode=true): The server verifies player identities against Mojang authentication servers. Whitelisting by name automatically resolves the authentic cryptographic UUID.
  • Offline / Proxy Networks (online-mode=false): When hosting behind Velocity or BungeeCord proxies without forwarding secrets, offline UUIDs are generated from player names. Ensure your proxy forwards authentic player UUIDs to avoid whitelist bypasses.
