Mods on a Necesse Dedicated Server
What to know about running mods on a Necesse dedicated server, including mod installation, client-server compatibility requirements, and where to find community mods.
Mod Support Overview
Necesse has limited official mod support. There is no built-in mod framework or official modding API as of the current release. Community-driven mods exist, but they operate outside any officially supported system.
How Mods Work in Necesse
Mods are placed in the game's mod directory on the host machine. The server loads any mods it finds in that directory at startup. Because Necesse does not have a mod synchronization system, all players must have the same mods installed on their clients before connecting.
Mod Directory Location
| Platform | Path |
|---|---|
| Windows | C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Necesse\mods\ |
| Linux | ~/.config/Necesse/mods/ |
Place mod files (typically .jar files) in this directory on both the server and every player's client.
Client-Server Compatibility
Mismatched mods will prevent players from joining. If the server has mods that a client does not have, or vice versa, the connection will fail. Every mod must be present on both sides with identical versions.
This means:
- Adding a mod to the server requires all players to install the same mod before they can reconnect.
- Removing a mod from the server requires players to also remove it from their clients.
Finding Mods
Community mods are distributed through:
- Steam Workshop — search for Necesse on the Steam Workshop page.
- Official Necesse Discord — the
#modschannel is the primary hub for community mod releases and support.
Always verify mod compatibility with your current server version before installing. Necesse updates may break existing mods.
Recommendations
- Keep a list of all active mods and their versions for your server.
- Communicate mod requirements clearly to your players before they try to connect.
- Test mods on a separate world before deploying to a live server.
- Back up your world save before installing new mods.
