Overview

Necesse dedicated servers are distributed through Steam and support both Windows and Linux. The server has no authentication token requirement — install via SteamCMD with anonymous login and launch directly.

SteamCMD Installation

The dedicated server App ID is 1169370. Anonymous login is supported:

steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 1169370 +quit

Run this command to install or update the server. SteamCMD will download all required files to the steamapps/common/Necesse Dedicated Server/ directory.

Starting the Server

Windows

Launch StartServer.bat from the install directory:

StartServer.bat

On first launch, the server presents interactive prompts asking for:

  • World name — the name of your save file
  • Port — default is 14159
  • Slots — maximum player count
  • Password — leave blank for no password
  • Spawn island — the starting island configuration
  • Seed — world generation seed

Note: The server.cfg file is overwritten on each startup based on what you enter at these prompts. To skip prompts and automate startup, pass all options as launch arguments instead.

Automated Launch (Windows)

To bypass the interactive prompts entirely, pass all options as arguments:

StartServer.bat -world MySave -port 14159 -slots 10

This is the recommended approach for any server that restarts automatically (scheduled tasks, panel restarts, etc.).

Linux

Use StartServer-nogui.sh with the -nogui flag to run without a GUI:

./StartServer-nogui.sh -world MySave -port 14159 -slots 10

Connecting to the Server

Necesse does not have a public server browser. Players connect via direct IP and port:

  1. In Necesse, select Multiplayer → Direct Connect.
  2. Enter the server's public IP address and port (e.g., 203.0.113.10:14159).

Share your server's public IP and port with players directly.

Post-Install Checklist

  1. Install the server via SteamCMD AppID 1169370.
  2. Open UDP port 14159 in your firewall.
  3. Launch with -world and -slots arguments to skip interactive prompts.
  4. Share your public IP and port with players.
