Loading Modules on a NWN:EE Server

How to install .mod files, hak packs, and custom TLK files on a NWN:EE server, and how to change modules at runtime.

Module Files

NWN:EE modules are .mod files placed in the modules directory:

Platform Path
Windows %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Neverwinter Nights\modules\
Linux ~/.local/share/Neverwinter Nights/modules/

The server loads the module specified by the -module argument at startup. The argument takes the filename without the .mod extension.

Installing a Module

  1. Download the .mod file from Neverwinter Vault or another source.
  2. Copy the .mod file to the modules directory.
  3. Launch the server with -module "ModuleName".

For a module named bastard_of_kosigan.mod:

nwserver.exe -module "bastard_of_kosigan"

For module names containing spaces, quote the argument:

nwserver.exe -module "The Bastard of Kosigan"

Hak Packs

Hak packs (.hak files) contain custom content referenced by the module — new tilesets, models, sounds, and scripts. If a module requires hak packs and they are absent, the module will fail to load or players will see missing content.

Place .hak files in:

Platform Path
Windows %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Neverwinter Nights\hak\
Linux ~/.local/share/Neverwinter Nights/hak\

The module's own documentation will list which .hak files it requires. Download all of them before starting the server.

Custom TLK Files

Custom TLK files (.tlk) contain localized string tables used by some modules. Place them in:

Platform Path
Windows %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Neverwinter Nights\tlk\
Linux ~/.local/share/Neverwinter Nights/tlk\

Not all modules require a custom TLK. Check the module's readme.

Changing Modules at Runtime

Use the module console command to switch modules without restarting the server process:

module ModuleName

This reloads the server with the specified module. Ensure the new module's .mod file and any required hak packs are already in place before issuing the command.
