Neverwinter Nights: EE Server Configuration

Complete reference for settings.tml (TOML format), all command-line arguments, and how CLI flags override config file values.

NWN:EEConfigurationsettings.tmlCommand LineTOML

Configuration File: settings.tml

NWN:EE uses settings.tml, a TOML-format file that replaces the legacy nwnplayer.ini. Edit this file while the server is stopped — it is read at startup and not reloaded while the server is running.

File location:

Platform Path
Windows %USERPROFILE%\Documents\Neverwinter Nights\settings.tml
Linux ~/.local/share/Neverwinter Nights/settings.tml

CLI vs. settings.tml Priority

Command-line arguments always override the corresponding settings.tml value. Use settings.tml for stable baseline settings and CLI arguments for values that change between instances (port, module name, passwords).

Environment Variable Overrides

Settings can also be set via environment variables using the pattern:

NWN_CONFIG_SET_key=value

For example, to set the server name:

export NWN_CONFIG_SET_servername="My Server"

Environment variables are evaluated after settings.tml but before CLI arguments in the precedence chain.
