Admin and RCON on Open Fortress
Open Fortress uses the same RCON protocol as other Source Engine games. For full admin management — player kicks, bans, map changes, and chat commands — install SourceMod with the Open Fortress compatibility plugin.
RCON
RCON (Remote Console) lets you run server commands from outside the server process: from a connected game client, or from an external tool.
Setting the RCON Password
In open_fortress/cfg/server.cfg:
rcon_password "YourStrongPassword"
A blank rcon_password disables RCON entirely. Anyone with this password has full console access to the server — treat it as a privileged credential.
Using RCON from a Game Client
Connect to your server, then open the developer console:
rcon_password "YourStrongPassword"
rcon status
rcon changelevel dm_well
rcon exec server.cfg
rcon say "Server restarting in 5 minutes"
Common RCON Commands
rcon status # list players, Steam IDs, pings
rcon changelevel dm_harvest # change map immediately
rcon kick "#45" "Reason" # kick a player by userid
rcon sv_cheats 0 # enforce no cheats
rcon exec server.cfg # reload config
rcon say "Message to all players" # broadcast server message
Get a player's #userid from rcon status — it's the number in the first column.
SourceMod Setup
For structured admin management (per-player permissions, ban tracking, map voting), install MetaMod:Source and SourceMod.
Step 1 — Install MetaMod:Source
Download from sourcemm.net — use the Source SDK 2013 / Source build. Extract into open_fortress/:
open_fortress/addons/metamod/
open_fortress/addons/metamod.vdf
Step 2 — Install SourceMod
Download from sourcemod.net. Extract into open_fortress/:
open_fortress/addons/sourcemod/
open_fortress/addons/sourcemod.vdf
Step 3 — Install Open-Fortress-Tools Plugin
The Open-Fortress-Tools plugin is required for SourceMod compatibility with Open Fortress. Without it, several SM natives fail or behave incorrectly against OF's game logic.
Repository: https://github.com/openfortress/SM-Open-Fortress-Tools
Download the plugin files and gamedata from that repository. Place:
open_fortress/addons/sourcemod/plugins/ ← .smx plugin files
open_fortress/addons/sourcemod/gamedata/ ← OF-specific gamedata
Restart the server. Verify everything loaded:
rcon meta version
rcon sm version
Adding Admins
Admins are defined in open_fortress/addons/sourcemod/configs/admins_simple.ini. Use legacy Steam IDs (format STEAM_0:X:XXXXXXX — not SteamID64):
"STEAM_0:0:12345678" "99:z"
"STEAM_0:1:87654321" "99:bdfg"
Format: "<steamid>" "<immunity>:<flags>"
99:z— root access (all permissions)99:bdfg— kick, ban, unban, slay
Reload the admin list without restarting:
rcon sm_reloadadmins
Common Admin Commands
Once SourceMod is running, admins can use these from in-game chat or console:
sm_kick "PlayerName"
sm_ban "#45" 60 "Reason" // ban for 60 minutes; 0 = permanent
sm_unban "STEAM_0:0:12345678"
sm_map dm_well
sm_changelevel dm_harvest
sm_say "Announcement to server"
sm_slay "PlayerName"
