SourceMod and Plugins on Open Fortress
Install MetaMod:Source and SourceMod on Open Fortress, then add the Open-Fortress-Tools plugin for compatibility and admin management.
SourceMod on Open Fortress
SourceMod provides the plugin infrastructure for admin management, map voting, anti-cheat, and custom server logic. Because Open Fortress modifies Source Engine internals, you also need the Open-Fortress-Tools plugin from the OF GitHub to ensure SM compatibility.
Why SourceMod?
Without SourceMod, your only tools are RCON and server.cfg. SourceMod adds:
- Per-player admin permissions tied to Steam IDs
- Map voting (RTV, nominations) via built-in plugins
- Ban tracking and management
- Custom plugins for OF-specific features
- Anti-flood and moderation tools
Step 1 — Install MetaMod:Source
MetaMod:Source sits between srcds and the game and provides the plugin API that SourceMod runs on. You need MetaMod before SourceMod.
- Download from sourcemm.net — use the Source SDK 2013 / TF2 build matching your OS.
- Extract the archive. Copy the resulting files so you have:
open_fortress/addons/metamod/
open_fortress/addons/metamod.vdf
- Start the server and verify MetaMod loaded:
rcon meta version
Expected output:
Metamod:Source version 1.XX.X
If you see Unknown command, MetaMod did not load — re-check the file paths.
Step 2 — Install SourceMod
- Download from sourcemod.net — use the TF2 / Source SDK 2013 build for your OS.
- Extract the archive into
open_fortress/. You should now have:
open_fortress/addons/sourcemod/
open_fortress/addons/sourcemod.vdf
- Restart the server and verify:
rcon sm version
Expected output:
SourceMod Version Information:
SourceMod Version: 1.XX.X
Step 3 — Install Open-Fortress-Tools
This is the critical OF-specific step. Without it, some SM natives return incorrect values or fail entirely against OF's modified game state.
Repository: https://github.com/openfortress/SM-Open-Fortress-Tools
Clone or download the repository, then copy files to the appropriate locations:
open_fortress/addons/sourcemod/plugins/ ← .smx files from the repo
open_fortress/addons/sourcemod/gamedata/ ← .txt gamedata files from the repo
Restart the server. Verify the plugin loaded:
rcon sm plugins list
Look for the Open Fortress Tools entry in the output.
Verifying the Full Stack
After installing all three components, run these checks:
rcon meta list # should show SourceMod as a MetaMod plugin
rcon sm plugins list # should show OF Tools and default SM plugins
Default SM plugins that ship pre-installed include basechat.smx, admin-flatfile.smx, mapchooser.smx, rockthevote.smx, and nominations.smx. These all work on OF with the Tools plugin installed.
Admin Setup
Grant admin access via open_fortress/addons/sourcemod/configs/admins_simple.ini:
"STEAM_0:0:12345678" "99:z"
"STEAM_0:1:87654321" "99:bdfg"
99:z— full root access99:bdfg— kick, ban, unban, slay
Reload without restarting:
rcon sm_reloadadmins
Installing Additional Plugins
Drop .smx files into open_fortress/addons/sourcemod/plugins/. Load without a full restart:
rcon sm plugins load myplugin
Plugin configs auto-generate at open_fortress/addons/sourcemod/configs/ on first run.
Keeping SourceMod Updated
If a Source Engine update breaks SourceMod, check sourcemod.net for a compatibility release. Replace the binaries in open_fortress/addons/sourcemod/bin/ with the new build. The Open-Fortress-Tools plugin may also need an update — check the GitHub repository.
