Important: Dedicated Servers Need a Mod

Valheim's built-in dev commands (god, spawn, fly, etc.) do not work on dedicated servers by default. They only work in single-player and local co-op.

To enable these commands on a dedicated server, you need:

  • Server devcommands — the most widely used mod for this. It re-enables the full command set on dedicated servers. Primarily a server-side mod, but some commands also need the client-side version.
  • BepInEx — required as a framework for Server devcommands to run.

See How to Install Mods on Your Valheim Server for the installation walkthrough.

Step 1: Install Server devcommands

  1. Install BepInEx on your server (see mod install guide)
  2. Download Server_devcommands.dll from Nexus Mods or Thunderstore
  3. Upload it to /BepInEx/plugins/ on your server
  4. Restart the server

Some commands also require the client-side mod — players who want to use commands in-game should install the same mod via Thunderstore Mod Manager.

Step 2: Enable Cheats In-Game

You must be listed in adminlist.txt before cheats will work. See How to Add Admins.

  1. Connect to your server
  2. Press F5 to open the console
  3. Type devcommands and press Enter
devcommands

The console will confirm:

Dev commands: ON

Cheats are now active for your session. Other non-admin players on the server are not affected.

Disable Cheats When Done

To turn dev commands back off:

devcommands

Running it again toggles it off. Cheats are session-scoped — a server restart also resets them to off.

Alternative: Valheim Plus

If you want persistent gameplay tweaks without console commands, Valheim Plus is a comprehensive configuration mod. It requires installation on both server and client, but gives you a valheim_plus.cfg file you can tune to:

  • Modify player stats, carry weight, stamina
  • Change crafting and cooking speeds
  • Adjust fermenter and smelter speeds
  • Enable/disable specific game mechanics
