Managing Admins on Valheim Dedicated Servers
Server administrators are defined in a plain text configuration file called adminlist.txt stored in your server configuration directory. Administrators gain access to in-game moderation commands via the F5 console, including kick, ban, unban, and ping monitoring.
Finding Player Identifiers
To add an administrator, you need their unique platform identifier:
Steam Players (SteamID64)
Steam users are identified by a 17-digit SteamID64 (starts with 7656119...). You can look up any Steam profile URL using our Steam ID Converter.
Xbox and Game Pass Players (Platform IDs)
Xbox and Microsoft Store players do not have SteamID64s. Instead:
- Have the player connect to your server once.
- Check your DustBowl Warden Console tab for the connection log:
Got handshake from client <PlayerPlatformID> - Copy the string of characters representing their platform identifier.
Adding Admins in DustBowl Warden
- Log in to DustBowl Warden and open your server.
- Navigate to File Manager ->
.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/. - Locate and click
adminlist.txtto open it in the in-browser text editor. - Add each admin identifier on a separate line:
// Server Administrators 76561198001234567 76561198098765432 PlayFab_1234567890ABCDEF - Click Save Content.
- The admin list hot-reloads dynamically, but having the player reconnect ensures permissions are recognized immediately.

Available Vanilla Admin Commands
Admins open the console in-game by pressing F5 (ensure -console is set in your Steam client launch options). Supported vanilla commands include:
| Command | Action |
|---|---|
kick [name/ip/userID] |
Disconnects the specified player from the server. |
ban [name/ip/userID] |
Kicks the player and appends their identifier to bannedlist.txt. |
unban [ip/userID] |
Removes the ban entry and restores access. |
banned |
Displays the list of all currently banned players. |
ping |
Displays your current round-trip network ping to the server. |
info |
Displays system memory and network stats. |
The Devcommands Restriction on Dedicated Servers
In vanilla Valheim, developer cheats (devcommands, god, fly, spawn, nocost) are intentionally disabled on remote dedicated servers for security reasons, even for users listed in adminlist.txt.
If you wish to use developer commands on your dedicated server, install BepInEx and the Server Devcommands mod. See our dedicated guide on How to Enable Devcommands and Debug Mode in Valheim and explore compatible plugins with our Valheim Mod Reference Tool.
