How to Kick and Ban Players on Your Valheim Server
Use the in-game console or edit bannedlist.txt directly to kick and ban players from your Valheim server.
Prerequisites: Admin Access
The in-game console commands for kicking and banning only work if you're an admin on the server. If you haven't set that up yet, add your Steam64 ID to adminlist.txt first.
Once you're an admin, open the console in-game with F5.
Console Commands
kick [name or SteamID]
Immediately disconnects the player. They can rejoin unless banned.
ban [name or SteamID]
Adds the player to the ban list and kicks them in one step.
unban [SteamID]
Removes a Steam64 ID from the ban list. Name doesn't work here — you must use the full Steam64 ID.
banned
Prints the full list of currently banned Steam64 IDs to the console.
Getting a Player's Steam64 ID
A few ways to find it:
- From the kick confirmation — when you kick someone by name, Valheim shows their Steam64 ID in the console output. You can then immediately run
ban [SteamID]with that ID. - From server logs — player Steam IDs appear in the server log on connect and disconnect.
- From the player's Steam profile — look up their public profile URL at steamid.io.
Save the ID if you need to unban them later — unban requires the exact Steam64 ID.
Editing bannedlist.txt Directly
If you need to ban someone who has already left the server — or you prefer to manage bans outside the game — edit the ban list file directly.
Location:
~/.config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/bannedlist.txt
Format: one Steam64 ID per line, same as the other list files.

Workflow for a manual ban:
- Stop the server.
- Add the Steam64 ID to
bannedlist.txt. - Start the server.
You can also edit the file while the server is running — Valheim checks the ban list at connection time — but a restart ensures the change is fully applied.
Removing a Ban
Either run unban [SteamID] in the console, or manually delete the Steam64 ID from bannedlist.txt and restart.
