How to Install AMX Mod X on Your CS 1.6 Server
AMX Mod X gives you admin commands, plugin support, and full server control. Install it on top of Metamod-P in a few steps.
Prerequisites
Metamod-P must be installed and verified working before you do any of this. If you haven't done that yet, start with the Metamod-P install guide.
Download the Right Packages
Go to amxmodx.org/downloads.php and grab two packages — both are required:
- AMX Mod X Base — the core engine
- Counter-Strike Addon — CS-specific plugins and configs
Make sure you're downloading the Linux versions (.tar.gz files).
Install
Extract both archives directly into your cstrike/ directory. They're structured to unpack into the right places automatically:
cd /home/gameserver/hlds/cstrike
tar -xzf amxmodx-1.10.0-base-linux.tar.gz
tar -xzf amxmodx-1.10.0-csstrike-linux.tar.gz
Both archives populate cstrike/addons/amxmodx/.
Register AMX with Metamod
Open cstrike/addons/metamod/plugins.ini and add this line:
linux addons/amxmodx/dlls/amxmodx_mm_i386.so
Save the file. This is how Metamod knows to load AMX on startup.
Restart and Verify
Restart the server. In the console, run:
amxx version
You should see output like:
AMX Mod X version 1.10.0-dev
Also run meta list — AMX should appear in the plugin list with status RUN.
Key Directories
After a successful install:

amxx.cfg
This is the master config for AMX itself. The defaults are fine for most servers, but pay attention to:
amx_language "en" // server language for AMX messages
amx_logmaxsize 512 // max log file size in KB before rollover
amx_reservation 0 // reserved slots (0 = none)
Common Install Errors
[AMXX] Unable to load module 'mysql' — You're loading a plugin that requires the MySQL module. Install the extras package from amxmodx.org or remove the plugin causing it.
[AMXX] Plugin is not compatible — Version mismatch. Make sure your plugins were compiled for the same AMXX version you installed.
AMX shows as FAIL in meta list — The .so path in plugins.ini is wrong, or the file is missing. Check the path exactly.
