Save File Location
Necesse stores each world as a single .zip file:
| Platform | Path |
|---|---|
| Windows | C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Necesse\saves\ |
| Linux | ~/.config/Necesse/saves/ |
Each file is named after the world — for example, a world named MySave is stored as MySave.zip.
Specifying Which World to Load
Pass the world name via the -world launch argument. The name must match the .zip filename exactly (without the .zip extension):
./StartServer-nogui.sh -world MySave
If no -world argument is provided, the server will prompt interactively.
Backing Up a World
A backup is a copy of the .zip file. No special tools are required:
Linux:
cp ~/.config/Necesse/saves/MySave.zip ~/.config/Necesse/saves/MySave-backup-$(date +%F).zip
Windows (PowerShell):
Copy-Item "$env:APPDATA\Necesse\saves\MySave.zip" `
"$env:APPDATA\Necesse\saves\MySave-backup-$(Get-Date -Format yyyy-MM-dd).zip"
Restoring a World
- Stop the server.
- Copy the backup
.zipto the saves directory, naming it to match the world name the server expects. - Start the server with
-world <worldname>.
Resetting or Wiping a World
To start fresh on a world name:
- Delete the
.zipfile — the server will generate a new world with that name on next start. - Rename the
.zipfile to archive the old world — the server will create a new one under the original name.
Editing World Settings
World-specific settings are stored in worldSettings.cfg inside the .zip archive. To edit them:
- Stop the server.
- Extract the
.zipfile. - Edit
worldSettings.cfgwith a text editor. - Re-zip the contents (the
.zipmust have the same internal structure — do not add an extra folder layer). - Replace the original
.zipin the saves directory. - Restart the server.
Editing
worldSettings.cfgwhile the server is running will have no effect and may be overwritten when the server saves.
