NWN:EE Server Admin Management

How to set admin and DM passwords, use console commands, manage bans, and export character data on a NWN:EE server.

Password Setup

Set passwords in your startup command or settings.tml:

Argument Purpose
-adminpassword "pw" Server console admin — grants admin access in the server console
-dmpassword "pw" DM client password — allows a player to log in as Dungeon Master
-playerpassword "pw" Require players to enter a password to join

DM Client

The DM (Dungeon Master) client allows a privileged player to manage the game in real time — spawning creatures, controlling NPCs, teleporting players, and running scripts. To connect as a DM:

  1. Launch NWN:EE.
  2. On the multiplayer screen, select Dungeon Master instead of Player.
  3. Enter the DM password when prompted.

The DM client session runs inside the game world and does not replace the server console.

Server Console Commands

These commands are entered directly in the nwserver console window:

Command Effect
status Display current server status and player list
say [message] Broadcast a message to all connected players
exit / quit Shut down the server
module [name] Load a different module
save [slot#] [name] Save the game (slots 0 and 1 are reserved)
forcesave [slot#] [name] Overwrite an existing save
load [slot#] Load a saved game
kick [player] Remove a player from the server
banip Ban a player by IP address
bankey Ban a player by CD key
banname Ban a player by character name
unbanip / unbankey / unbanname Remove a ban
listbans List all active bans
export Save all player characters to disk
help Print all available commands

Ban Management

Three ban methods are available:

  • banip — blocks the player's IP address. Bypassed if the player connects from a different network.
  • bankey — blocks the player's CD key. The most reliable method — the CD key persists across IP changes, VPNs, and name changes.
  • banname — blocks a specific character name. Least reliable — players can create new characters with different names.

For persistent bans, prefer bankey.

Server Vault and Character Export

When running with -servervault 1, all player characters are stored on the server rather than client-side. Before shutting down the server:

export

This writes all player characters to disk. Skipping this step on an unclean shutdown may result in character progress loss.
