Open Fortress Server Maps and Map Rotation
Configure your Open Fortress map pool, set the starting map, and manage automatic map rotation using mp_timelimit and mapcycle.txt.
Maps and Map Rotation in Open Fortress
As of 2024, Open Fortress ships with approximately 53 official maps: 38 Deathmatch, 10 Duel, 3 MCTF, and 1 Lethal Lockdown. Maps are identified by their filename prefix, which also determines the game mode.
Map Prefixes by Mode
| Prefix | Mode | Count (2024) |
|---|---|---|
dm_ |
Deathmatch / Team DM / Arsenal / Domination | 38 |
duel_ |
Duel (1v1) | 10 |
mctf_ |
Merc Capture the Flag | 3 |
Notable Maps
Deathmatch:
dm_crossfire ← TF2 port; popular default starting map
dm_well
dm_harvest
dm_2fort ← TF2 port adapted for DM
Duel:
duel_arena
duel_ (various small arena maps)
Merc CTF:
mctf_2fort ← CTF adaptation of 2fort
Setting the Starting Map
Pass the starting map as a launch argument. dm_crossfire is the most commonly used default for DM servers:
./srcds_run -console -game open_fortress -port 27015 \
+maxplayers 24 +map dm_crossfire
Automatic Map Rotation
Map rotation is controlled by mp_timelimit in server.cfg. When the time limit expires, the server loads the next map in mapcycle.txt.
mp_timelimit 20 // rotate every 20 minutes
Set to 0 to disable time-based rotation (maps only change on manual command or when mp_fraglimit / mp_maxrounds triggers).
mapcycle.txt
open_fortress/cfg/mapcycle.txt lists the maps the server cycles through. One map name per line, no file extension:
dm_crossfire
dm_well
dm_harvest
dm_2fort
Keep the rotation to a single prefix type per server unless you are intentionally running a mixed-mode server. Mixing dm_ and duel_ maps in the same rotation will produce inconsistent mode behavior.
Community and Custom Maps
Community maps can be installed by placing .bsp files in open_fortress/maps/. Add the map name to mapcycle.txt and optionally maplist.txt (used by SourceMod's nomination system if you have it installed).
The Open Fortress community distributes custom maps through the official Discord and community forums. There is no Steam Workshop server subscription for OF — custom maps must be manually downloaded and placed on the server.
For distributing custom maps to players without slow in-game download speeds, configure a FastDL URL:
sv_downloadurl "http://yourcdn.example.com/open_fortress/"
Mirror your open_fortress/ directory on an HTTP server and point sv_downloadurl at the root.
Manual Map Change
From the server console or via RCON:
changelevel dm_well
Or with SourceMod installed:
rcon sm_map dm_harvest
