Game Server Launch Checklist

Review and finalize your server config file

Check hostname, passwords, max players, and game-specific settings.

Join with a separate account and verify the game loads correctly.

Verify file/folder permissions

Ensure the server process can write save files and logs.

Set up automated backups

Configure auto-restart on crash

Use systemd (Linux) or a restart loop script to keep the server alive.

Open the correct game ports in your firewall

Verify TCP and UDP ports are forwarded/open.

Generate firewall rules for your OS

Use the Firewall Rule Generator for ufw or iptables.

Test that the port is reachable from outside

Use canyouseeme.org or ask a friend to connect-test.

Point a domain/subdomain at your server IP

Set up an A record or SRV record for a clean join address.

Enable DDoS protection if public-facing

Shared hosting with DDoS mitigation is strongly recommended for public servers.

Add yourself as admin/operator

Without this you cannot manage the server in-game.

Define admin role tiers

Set up head admin, moderator, and trial-mod roles before inviting others.

Test that RCON commands work

Connect with an RCON client and verify at least one command returns a response.

Enable server logging

Make sure you can see kick/ban events and player connections in logs.

Write your server rules

Post rules in Discord and in-game (MOTD or sign) before players join.

Create a Discord server or channel for your game

Set up #announcements, #rules, and a support/help channel.

Set up uptime monitoring

Use UptimeRobot (free tier) or ntfy.sh to alert you when the server goes down.

Plan your wipe/reset schedule

For games with map wipes, communicate the schedule to your community.

Test game updates before pushing to production

Subscribe to the game's update announcements and test each update before restarting live.

Review player count weekly

Watch trends — slow decline often precedes server death. Stay engaged with your community.
