How to Back Up Your V Rising Server

V Rising autosaves every 5 minutes, but those saves won't help you if the whole server goes sideways. Here's how to take proper backups you can actually restore from.

Where Your World Data Lives

V Rising save files are stored at:

VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Saves/v3/

The v3 folder name reflects the current save format version — this may change after major updates. Inside it, each world has its own subfolder named after your world (set in ServerHostSettings.json). Within that folder you'll find a series of AutoSave_N directories, each containing a full snapshot of the world state at the time of that autosave.

A typical save directory looks like:

Saves/
  v3/
    MyWorld/
      AutoSave_0/
      AutoSave_1/
      AutoSave_2/
      ...
      AutoSave_49/

V Rising keeps a rolling set of autosaves (50 by default). The highest-numbered one is the most recent.

How Autosave Works

V Rising autosaves approximately every 5 minutes while the server is running. There is no manual save command — you cannot trigger a save on demand from the console or control panel. The autosave cycle handles everything automatically.

This means if something goes wrong between autosaves, you could lose up to 5 minutes of progress. That's usually fine for normal play, but it's why taking your own periodic backups matters — autosaves are not a substitute for an off-server backup.

How to Take a Backup

  1. Stop the server — this ensures all data has been flushed to disk and you're not copying a partial write
  2. Navigate to VRisingServer_Data/StreamingAssets/Saves/ in your file manager
  3. Download the entire Saves/ directory to your local machine — compress it first if your file manager supports it, since these directories can get large
  4. Start the server again

If you're using SFTP, connect to your server and recursively download the Saves/ folder. Most SFTP clients (FileZilla, WinSCP, Cyberduck) handle recursive downloads well.

At minimum:

  • Before any server update — especially major updates or DLC releases, which can change the save format
  • Before wiping or resetting the world — so you have a rollback point if players change their minds
  • Weekly for active servers — or more frequently if your community is very active

A good backup habit protects you from update failures, accidental deletes, and storage issues. The Saves/ folder for an active world is typically 50–200 MB, so storage cost is low.

What Not to Delete

When backing up, copy the entire Saves/ directory. Do not touch the Settings/ folder during this process — your config files live there and are separate from world data. You can back up Settings/ too if you want a complete snapshot, but it's not strictly necessary since config files don't change unless you edit them.

Restoring from a Backup

  1. Stop the server
  2. Delete (or rename) the current world folder in Saves/v3/[WorldName]/
  3. Upload your backup folder to the same path
  4. Start the server

The server will load from the restored save on next start.
